Hi,

I already have a tripod, but it is a cheap one. I would like to buy a better one. I'm considering manfroto, because everyone sais it is good.

I need something light, but robust. The 190 series is just a little heavier than what i was expecting, but are very good.

The 190 has the XB, which has no horizontal bar and XPROB, which has the horizontal bar and is a little bit more expensive and taller.

Any advices? Should I check vanguard and benro?

Best regards,
Felipe

Definitely the horizontal option. And by all means consider Vanguard.

Vanguard has the alta pro option. Does it worth more than manfroto?

I use the Manfrotto. My camera store now carries the Vanguard and I absolutely love it, but I haven't actually used one, so... My guy says it's fantastic. The articulated center post can be used in more positions than the Manfrotto's, which is just vertical or horizontal...

Love my XPROB! The only complaint I've ever had is that sometimes I need a little more height, but otherwise it's fantastic.

It's interesting that this thread has come up now, because I've been looking at tripods the last few days as well. I first looked at some of the cheaper Manfrotto tripods, before coming across this Vanguard combination. I have since seen the Manfrotto XPROB as well, but the Vanguard works out substantially cheaper. I'm interested to know what the experts on DPC think of the head being offered here.

i've been using this cheaper manfrotto tripod for years and have been pretty happy with it. This past christmas I got this larger Vanguard tripod and will say it's a very solid performer, it's robust and very sturdy. I'd definitely recommend Vanguard if you're looking in that direction.

I have the carbon fiber 190CXPRO3 and I find it ok to carry about, I think the head is a lot heavier than the tripod itself, it's a bit more costly than the none carbon fiber version though but if you'll be carring it about a lot it's definetly worth it. I would also check the Vanguard tripods out, they didn't stock them where I got mine so I didn't get the choice.

Money spent on a tripod is equal to money spent on good quality lenses. A 190CXPRO3 is an amazing tool! However, whatever you get, make sure it is carbon/carbon compound. They are light and much more pleasure to carry. I gave my 190 away and got myself the unknown SIRUI T1204X, simply because it is even lighter, more suitable for my situation. No, it is definitely not a Manfrotto, but it is something I can still take with me.

Here in my country all this tripods are likely to be the double or triple price paid in US. So I can't afford a carbon filter right now. ;( But I would like a tripod that I won't regret and need to last years ;)

I think i'm going to XPROB too. Just a little more expensive, with a quite good feature, and I like to take different angle photos. I don't know if in the hurry I will try to disassemble the tripod to flip the head on the XB. My concern now is mainly the weight ... but a carbon fiber is to expensive here ;(

Another doubt. What is better a 3 or 4 segments tripod?

I have the 190XPROB and very pleased with it.

The less segments the better,is the general rule.

I wasn't very clear in what I said earlier. I am almost certainly going to get the Vanguard kit I referred to. What I wanted was opinions on the GH-100 head. From what I've seen the Vanguard tripod is similar in capabilities to the XPROB but is slightly taller (taller than I need) and can take a heavier camera. And it is cheaper.

I use a Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick Head and i really like the ease of use and the rapidity with wish you can get things right, a joystick is just so easy to use.

I think pistol grips are horrible. One MAJOR disadvantage is you can't point the camera up much at all. In general, I find them imprecise and troublesome. I don't much care for ballheads anyway, on grounds of precision, and this is the worst sort of ballhead IMO.

Oh dear, two opposing opinions!

The tripod I've seen only seems to come in two kits with different heads. Both are ball heads, and the one that's not a pistol grip is even more expensive. Buying most things in South Africa is difficult because there's just not the same variety available as what I see mentioned on DPC, so I doubt I could even find a different head if I wanted to.

It takes only a few seconds with a joystick to get in the position you want, i have another tripod for the other car and it has a normal head on, it takes a lot longer to get things squared up, if i were you i would give them a test before buying, if its precision your after then a traditional head would probably be better, if its ease of use and speed then the ball head joystick type would be best i think.

The two tripods are at shops about an hour away from each other, in opposite directions from where I live. The ordinary ball head is in an area I've only been to once and had no plans for returning to, but it is also a ball head. I haven't seen a head for this tripod that isn't a ball head, so at best I will only be able to try out the head with the pistol grip. That one is the cheaper option and even that costs more than I was planning to spend. But I'm so tired of my junk tripod which has zero precision and no speed that I feel I have to invest in something that will give me good use for a long time.

The only reason I think there are 4 segments is that the tripod would be taller. This would mean extra time to adjust as well. Perhaps the shorter distance in which you extend each segment would mean more stabilisation? Others might have better answers.

I have a Manfrotto 3021 BPRO (with an 804RC2 head) which is quite sturdy, it can be heavy to lug around. For some reason it is out of stock on most sites. I think it has been replaced by an 055 XPROB.

B&H will ship to South Africa.

Thanks, but I'm not sure I like the idea of buying something I haven't seen. Besides, our postal service is rather unreliable.

And it WILL be stolen/held back at the tax office or damaged. Experience talking in every respect.

Any one know if the xprob central bar can be adjusted to angles between 0 and 90? I would like to set 45.
