Several DPCers have undertaken the task of tracking all sorts of DPC statistics on the side - most notably SDW, NiallOTuama, etc. You could tap them for feedback on how to do it. I think it's an interesting idea, and would love to see it in action. With Langdon's approval of course :-)

yo_spiff should love this (...or hate it?)

If it were a V shaped vote distribution, then it would be anything but a meh entry. The tall spike in the 5's is the thing to want to avoid. I'm getting to where the comments are more important than the score. My last two freestudies are good examples:

A win with a 5.43 and 11 positive comments in-challenge.

I call this one a failure at 5.72 and only a single in-challenge comment.

I am all for new ideas and change. I think its a most admirable quality in a person- the ability to embrace rather than ridicule change or new ideas.

Not entirely related, but I heard a quote a couple of months back that stuck with me:

"Risk is the currency of progress".

I always thought that standard deviation should be part of the calculations. It gives such great information.

They call it a normal curve for good reason

8 )

That's not a "normal" curve, is it? I thought a "normal" curve was a hump in the middle, tapering away at each side. That curve has three populations, the middle being the normal people, the right side being enlightened people, and the left side being self-righteous idiots. ;-D

Every modern database platform has a standard deviation function. It could be added as an image statistic most easily. I'd love to see it. It's more telling than the score in a lot of ways.

What I'd really love to be able to see is the histogram building in real time, with perhaps some summary stats (like standard deviation). That would be cool. Perhaps it's time to add it as a suggestion over at the official suggestion site?

Different voting styles, types, and applications have been discussed ad nauseum on the site. Personally, my belief is that if you started giving props for deviation a ton of photos would suddenly be all 5 votes, because the trolls are a bigger segment of the population here than we give credit for. Yes, during the day they are out taking pictures, but at night. . .they lurk under bridges. : )

You can already have part of that with niall's plug in:

I agree, though perhaps not a pure "V" but a more gentle "upside-down bell shape" - which tells me exactly what I need to know: e.g. a commercial/stock person will 1 or 2 a fine art pic and 9 or 10 the water drops with food coloring stuff or the megabuck model or wedding outtake. and the reverse is no doubt true also; although it seems there are just far more commercial/stock, or wannabe versions anyway, here at DPC.

Yes, that is a far more accurate description. A hard V is unlikely at best. I'm just trying to get one entry that has fewer 5's than 4's & 6's. Came close once, and was one vote off from it.

I would love a sigma prize. I would always want to know who won that.

For each challenge? I can do that very easily if you'd like. I can actual probably automate it so I personally don't have to post in the thread too. Anyone wanna design a badge for me :-)
