Hi,
I have a basic question. What is the lowest shutter speed on a tripod when shooting people sitting in an audience? They are just sitting and watching a presentation on a screen (so they are not moving too much). I haven't done any tests but I am guessing 1/30th maybe?

You might get away with 1/30 but you'd want multiple shots in case someone moves unexpectedly. Generally, 1/50 is about the bottom limit for live subjects, and that's if they are still. Often, you'll still get some movement at 1/50, especially if you have multiple people in the shot.

I would try for 1/60th but if you don't have enough light you can go down to 1/30 or 1/15th. The lower you go you may want to use a remote to keep the camera from shaking when you press the shutter. If you don't have a remote available you can go with the timer mode (2 sec.).

| I guess it also depends quite a bit on the focal length you will be shooting at. 17mm on your full frame wont show too much movement but something towards 200mm will need to be much faster. No lenses stated in your profile so I'm not sure what you have / would be using. |

Generally 1/80 should be safe enough if people are sitting and watching, and anything under 1/60 less so.
In my experience, there are topic moments in a presentation when people will tend not to talk to each other and just listen and stare at the screen, it might be worth figuring out when these might happen and exploit them. |

| Hey! What will you be shooting with, FX/DX (Full or crop sensor)? And what lens, particularly aperture F/1.8, f/2.8, etc? |

| Thanks everyone. I will aim for 1/50th the slowest. I do have a remote so I will bring that. I am shooting with full sensor. I am intending to bring my 16-35mm f2.8 for wide angle shots, then 70-200mm f2.8 for close ups. I also have a 400mm DO lens that I thought of using when the lights are still up to get close ups of the speaker but that lens is only f4. Not sure if it is worth even bothering with it. |
