Is there a certain time of day or light from a certain direction that increases the reflections in water? I seem to get varying results and would like to learn how best to take these shots as I love them and have lots of photo ops as I have a cabin on the river and lots of other creeks, falls, etc close by.

My past experience is that water reflections in lakes and ponds are stronger when the sun is low in the sky... either early or late in the day... The air is usually more calm during these times of day as well, which makes the water calmer and allows stronger reflections...

As an addition to John's suggestion, I think you would get stronger reflections when the sun is to your side, as opposed to in front or behind you.

And don't use a polariser! ;o)

I would think you'll get the strongest reflections at a calm time of day (usually early morning) and when the subject that is reflecting is brightly lit - the more light on the subject, the better the reflections you are going to see...

Also with water, even lakes, a long exposure creates lovely, smoothed reflections that can be really effective, compared to shorter exposures.

That's why my 'waiting for bat's picture has that silvery/ glassy look to it - at least I like the effect.

Just a favorite of mine from a few years ago. This was high noon, but not even the slightest breeze.

Don't forget the puddles after a rain and the sun comes out. I caught my son in his yellow rain gear jumping in one of the puddles and it made for one of my favorite photos. Reflections are great!
