Twice in the last week I've had two different people come to me and ask me to retouch their photos that they have. I know they want it done for free, but I don't have the time to retouch photos for free that will get me no tearsheets, publications, or future work. Actually I don't have much time to do those even if they do provide one of the three. So now I have to come up with a price for retouching photos.

Retouching would be pretty much my usual, color correcting/exposure correcting in Lightroom and then using photoshop to remove blemishes, editing eyes, lips, etc. Doing any blurring...all the details. Probably looking at 30-1 hour per photo since I do it all by hand and not with actions.

Do other people charge just to retouch photos and if so, where do you get an idea of what to charge for just the retouching portion.

I'm currently thinking of charging just my normal per photo fee without the sitting fee.

Also I know the whole deal about making sure they are allowed to be edited, what their usage rights are etc...I normally wouldn't touch other peoples photography and retouch them, but if two cases have asked me to do so I might consider it.

I would probably charge between $30-60/hour for that kind of work, depending on their ability to pay ... also, depends if they mean "adjusting" (e.g. for prints) or actual retouching, the latter being more expensive ....

I'm pretty much in line with Paul, but perhaps a little higher. My philosophy is that I would need to do the calculation as if I were working full time at it; what would it take to pay me, my expenses and any tax burden (e.g. social security contribution). I come up with right around $60/hour, and that's probably the minimum I would charge. Of course, an hour buys quite a bit of retouching. Hell, you could turn the Wicked Witch of the West into Miss America in that time ;-)

Or, if you're me, Miss America into the Wicked Witch of the West... More my style :-)

haha..thanks guys. I wouldn't plan on doing any crazy serious editing. I think I have na idea of what I will charge him. Since I didn't take the photos there's a higher risk of him not liking the photos and my correcting the photographers lighting. I'll charge $50/hr because it is taking me away from other work I'm getting done also and he needs them done quickly.

I do so hate it when tape and ballpoint pen damage get on my digital copies. I need to do something about keeping my office trash in my back up hard drives.

When I'm doing coffe table book style of wedding albuns I always throw in some hours of photo editing, in a mix of layout design and actual photo manipulation/edition.

because some brides are never tired of asking for changes I started to charge per hour of extra editing. I usually charge 35€ (around 45 USD) per hour of photo editing. I also retouch damaged old photos that sometimes means reconstructing missing parts of the photo and extensive editing. although I set my fee to the same level (and charge more for reprinst after editing) I find myself wanting to charge more, but as this normally is heavy editing and several hour work I'm afraid to scare costumers off.
