Hey all, I didn't select to put my shallow dof in red entry up for critique when I submitted it (I've never asked for a critique) but I'd be really interested to hear some thoughts on my entry. It ranked a bit lower than I'd hoped for and wondered if anyone had any insights into why. Unappealing subject? Composition problem? Thanks guys. :-)

I'm guessing that it's because the red is almost an after thought instead of the "primary color".

The interest in the picture is the animal and the foreground/background -- which I think you did very nicely.

The red seems to be stuck in just to fit the red part of the challenge -- it doesn't seem to be an integral part of the picture, and doesn't really fit primary, imo.

It's like putting a santa hat on a puppy. The picture is of the puppy. The santa hat just adds a splash.

I didn't vote on the challenge, but I would have given it a 6 for a well done picture, but not one that hits a slam dunk for the challenge.

No harm in asking for a critique, it's not a sign of weakness. It means that you want someone to do an honest teardown of your pic and give you ideas as to where you missed, and where you hit bang on, and how to improve in the future. I often requested critiques in my early years here and depending on the critic, they could be a little scathing but overall correct in their assessment in what I had done wrong and how to improve. I know next time I'm over at Ryan's, he's going to sit down with me in front of his comp and tell me what's good and what needs work in my wedding photography. This is because I was his 2nd shooter at that wedding, and I've asked it of him. I know he will be honest which is what I want, and fair.

So now I am back to being an active CC member, I promise to be gentle if I do get an image of yours to critique! Don't be afraid to put them out there.
