Hi

Anyone every checked a Peli case into an aircraft hold?
I have a Peli Case with lenses and two camera bodies in and am due to fly to Iceland in 8 weeks.
My head says " it should be fine, that's what they are made for"
My head says " don't do it"

Any experience with this?
I do have all of the bits of kit cut into foam and not just dividers.
I want to take it all as it is a photographic trip, but feel very nervous?

Any comments would be great?

Thanks
Guy

I've got the Peli 1510, which is carryon sized, and I've successfully persuaded airlines to let me take it as carryon on several flights now. However, I'd have no problems (apart from TSA/baggage handler theft, but that's a different issue) with it being in the hold - those things are almost indestructable!

Seems like theft or misdirection (you are in Iceland, your camera is in Fiji) are the major risks, but unless you have something(s) more valuable you need to take as carry-ons, why wouldn't you keep it with you?

I had this exact same dilema when returning from Australia and bringing all my kit.

I ended up putting the whole lot in a carry on and sending the empty case by land, just couldn't bring myself to trust it, especially after some of the damage I've had done to normal suitcases.

When I had the whole lot in hang luggage (camera body + 5 lenses) no one even gave it a second glance. Just make sure they are all individually protected, I had all my lenses in their own cases, as it will still take some knocks and bumps even as hand luggage.

Thanks everyone.
Absolutely right about carry on.
It's just i have so much stuff that my Lowepro rucksack might struggle.
I want to take filters, flashes and lenses.
Plus cards and laptops.
It is a bit much for carry on.

I have the 1690 with all lenses mounted so that the lens caps show when you open the cases.
( I can get more in that way)
I have paid for an extra luggage allowance and really want to but there is just a nagging worry.

I have a watch that is water proof to six atmospheres,
I just want to be reassured that when I drop it in the sink whilst shaving it is going to be okay

The cases themselves are very tough - nothing like regular luggage. Alegedly, 2 were found intact and floating in the Atlantic Ocean after the crash of an Air France jet a few years ago. I would be more worried about it not arriving or arriving empty.

Did you ever think of shipping the lessor important equipment, and insure it? Carry on your important stuff like your camera, walk-around lens, computer, etc. Insure the hell out of the shipped stuff and it'll most likely get there. When I was in Africa (during the film period), I shipped all my pictures and exposed film back to the US. I insured it in the amount of return to a re-shoot. The insurance co agreed that was a reasonable stipulation. I lost nothing.

I travel fairly regularly and on trips abroad have managed to store 2 camera bodies, a 50/500 lens, a 24/105mm lens, a 70/200 lens, a 50mm lens, a 1.4 extender a KATA 3N1-30 camera bag, battery chargers, card reader and assorted equipment a all of this was allowable as a carry-on.

In addition, I also brought with me a laptop for use during my trip.

You really ought to be able to bring most of the stuff you need as carry-on luggage and leave the other stuff in your suitcase.
