was sent this video link of tribal people meeting westerners for the 1st time. i thought it was a amazing meeting, seems genuine and like a nice bunch of folks living deep in a jungle. its on a greek video site, but not much spoken in the video, and i dont speak that tribal dialect ;) but they did seem to like the rice...

the reactions are amazing. if you are interested in tribal culture and life I can recommend a great book by Daniel Everett " Don't sleep there are snakes". (this Video is Papua NG, and book is Amazon)

I saw the 8-track tape player and thought "when was this?" -- back-tracked a little, this was filmed in 1976. Fascinating.

Pretty cool, in the time that's passed since, I wonder how those natives are faring with modern technology since.

They are probably on the new Macdonalds advert. Which is what i thought this was for a while.

As to new technology, i guess they'll need a car now to get round all the homestead that has been bulldozed. Although i doubt they can call it home anymore.

What! Cynical? Me??

It's very interesting that in the book by Jared Diamond, Guns, Germs, and Steel, Professor Diamond states his belief that the people of Papua New Guinea are among the most intelligent in the world. They had to develop to be the smartest to live well in a hazardous environment with so few resources. They had no access to farm crops such as grains and therefore couldn't grow mass crops to feed themselves or livestock. Therefore, they had no free time to develop specialized skills other than pure survival in terrain where with one misstep they could fall to their death.

His book is long and sometimes dry, but overall a fantastic read.

edit for clarification

@yakatme yes i agree, i read about the PNG natives evolving and surviving with no proper agriculture, at the time the other growing peoples of the world either had: rice, corn or wheat as a crop to grow, they only have some yam plant, and that does not farm well, so they were always reliant on hunter gathering lifestyle. Aren't the PNG also more closely related to the "darvinson"??? line of humanity than any other group of humans? amazing history getting teased out slowly, we may be many things, but people are pretty clever!

I was reminded of this video whilst reading this depressing story this morning.

decided not to read the entire story, i prefer the way the guy was with them in 1976.
the more developed people have a long history of parading foreign people of "lesser" societies. if the aliens ever do come to visit, i hope whoever ends up in their zoo appreciates the irony!!

Right adjective. Depressing is surely right
