So this is the bible interpretation thread for the legitimacy of suspending a Facebook account. Kind of a letdown when you think of the potential.

Look up the definition of the English word "pederasty" and look for the greek root.

So, Dr. Etymologist the meaning of a current English word couldn't possibly be different from the original meaning of its root, could it? Doesn't vary one bit...carries right through over the millennia.

It's as clear as the bible condemning homosexuality...well actually the bible's stand on homosexuality is less clear.

o2bskating is female, I think. So does 'misogynist' still apply here?

Yeah, I'm confused... lol

Ha, that was exactly what I was thinking too.

Misogyny means ill-will or negative attitude towards women. Describing a woman as property to be delivered as a gift (for what purpose depends on your level of imagination/depravity) can be taken as a negative or demeaning portrayal, regardless of who makes the comment. But it could also be intended (if not always taken) as a joke.

mis is a root which means bad, negative, hatred-of (e.g. mistake, mis-fire0
gyn is a root meaning female or woman (e.g. gynecologist)
anthropo is a root meaning male or mankind (e.g. anthropology, anthropomorphic)

A misogynist is someone who hates, has negative feelings towards or wishes ill-will to women.

A misanthrope is someone who wishes the same towards men, or mankind in general.

That definition for misanthrope is sexist. :P

I just found it comical that the argument said, "why would Paul use his own word when we have a perfectly good word like "paideresste"?" when that word, instead of being obvious, also has its own literal definition of "child lover". It's like accusing someone of a specific fallacy and proving it by committing the fallacy yourself.

It would be hilarious if the literal translation of "paideresste" wasn't just as commonly translated to "boy lover". As in a man who loves boys.

Oh, yes, of course. But are you trying to tell me that all homosexuality in the ancient world was only between men and boys? Sex between two men was unheard of? If not, then why is the "perfect word" to be used specifically geared toward youth? Do you see my point? Where is the word to describe relations between two adult men?

But the meaning of the word "arsenokotai" is even less clear. In another, later instance not in the bible it is specifically referring to something men do to their wives... How could that be homosexual in any way?

As far as Facebook? Meh. I wouldn't want my kids coming across that if this is a public page, but on the other hand culture is full of this stuff and Leroy is hardly the original instigator.

Just so ya know, my page isn't visible to anyone under the age of 18. That said, I've had parents message me to tell me their kids could see it. My response is always, "Then, you need to take that up with your child. My page is 18+. So, your kid might be misrepresenting his/her age."

I don't usually get a response. And I can imagine it irks them a bit that I imply that they should take responsibilty for what their kids do on the net.

That makes me feel a bit better Leroy. I knew you were a sensible guy even if I don't quite go along with your genre of photography. :)

Spork, I just don't buy the argument that says "paul's word is so vague, this word is better. Oh wait, well this word is vague as well..."

it's probably one of those parents you told to pay attention to what their kid does that got you banned. they probably had all their friends email facebook too and boom your account is gone.

Probably adds to the list of people reporting me. But, I've got pretty significant proof that it's a fauxtographer that reports most of my images. Let's just say someone with little talent, little sense and much more overhead than I have.

It's so difficult to find pornography on the internet, I can imagine kids trying to circumvent the age restrictions on Facebook to track some down.

but not as vague.

In any event, claiming that that particular passage is where the bible calls out homosexuality as a sin just isn't the case. You can choose to interpret it that way and use that to justify your homophobia, but it's anything but definitive.

Whatever floats your boat Spaz. You seem as sure of the interpretation as anybody else...
