Looks like a lot of fun! Plan to try it soon. Just wondering if it has to be a Canon camera strap tied to the whisk? ;-)

Naa, Nikon straps suck just as much as the Canon strap when used as an actual camera strap. ;)

Home Depot / Local home improvement stores should have everything you need.Except the whisk ;)

I'll post my setup as soon as I get it out of trunk.

I've gotta give this a try...I am always looking to experiment.

It would be cool if you could set up a couple of those whisks full of steel wool on the rear bumper of your car, and set them off on the highway.

A whisk! Brilliant! I think this is a really fun thing to do although I'm a little gunshy after setting my parent's field on fire after the first picture below (It only burned about 50 sq feet before I put it out).

Ha! Would have loved to see a video that goes from setup to shooting through conflagration and extinguishing :)

Perhaps it was a good thing that there was a body of water nearby!

(I bet the brush needed clearing out anyway)

I wasn't too worried until I got my pants stuck in a blackberry bush while the flames were coming up toward me. It was only grass that was burning so it's not that hot, but I'm guessing it would have been hot enough... :P

Maybe that's how God got started?

Cable? I was just going to use some bungees duct taped together. Mind a local store does sell airplane cable so if cable is necessary I can get some.

I just used a metal coat hanger... ;) Some of us revel in the low tech.

Anything stretchable is no good because you are going to want to whirl an arc that nearly touches the ground, and possibly other things as well, so precision placement is greatly to be desired. Cable = Good, Bungee Cord = Very, Very Bad :-)

Can't I use cannon fuse?

@ Fred / Derf --

Awesome photos, all of 'em, really. Haven't watched your video tutorial yet, but I plan to, and I hope to try out this technique before too long.

One question for you though--dunno if you answer it in the video--but have you ever attracted any attention from local law enforcement? Some of your shots look like they were taken in highly visible locations, and it's easy for me to imagine that an officer on patrol might find something curious about huge radiating showers of sparks on a (wooden!) bridge...

I showed a coworker in the parkinglot at work ad midnight under a full moon, she was FLIPPING OUT that we were going to get "caught" by security and we would be fired. I showed her my stuff and within one minute of finishing, security started over towards us. He did not see what happened but asked what we were up to.... I told him, I showed him some shots and he was amazed. I told him I was done but if he wants to see I can do it again, He said as long as I was not going to set anything on fire and got out of his truck. This guy drives around all night in circles looking at parked cars...I was the most fun he had all month! He was amazed and wanted to do more. I apologized as I had to go home.

Like any type of photography, be upbeat and friendly...excited and wanting to show your hobby. The most you will usually get is told that it is not a good idea, "MOVE ALONG".

Most times I shoot I say "lets do it and get the hell out quick" but then I stay for 45 min or so lighting steel wool after steel wool. I am sure I will be stopped, it is just a matter of time. -Fred
