I have been using 2 compact flash cards, but recently went out for a full week and took numerous photos and found it a pain to only have 160mb of storage with a 5.0 megapixel camera. I am wondering if anyone knows if you could use an Apple iPod or even a palm pilot of some sort to transfer photos on to, would be nice to have a mp3 player and plenty of storage. Battery life is a must!

What does everyone else do when you cannot easily access a computer?

I'm not certain about the iPod. I know that they are USB compatible and will allow for data transfers, but are you traveling with a laptop? Palm Pilots will only accommodate SECURE DIGITAL media and the Palm units themselves top out 16MB internally. Although you can purchase MGI's Pocket Photosuite, I wouldn't recommend storing photos on your Palm, the commpression rate is not strong enough and will not allow more that 30 photos per 16MB (depending on the original file size).

If you don't mind the expense I would recommend investing in the POCKET WALLET by minds@work. They come in various capacities such as 10GB, just like the iPod, and don't require immediate computer interface.

Thanks for your help with that, I live in Australia, would anyone know a vendor here that supplies these photo wallet type devices?

Also how important is it to make sure that the photo wallet thing has verification?

Thanks

How important are your pictures to you?

What is verification?

Some devices without LCD screen do not tell you how many pictures are stored. they tell you if something went wrong .. but that's it.
This is the case of the XsDrive, the cheapest of them

//www.nixvue.com/products/album/technical-data.html

This site has a similar dvice to the XsDrive, again takes a standard laptop harddrive which is good, and it has verification, which now thanks to the very valid point of daysez, is important because you do not want to lose that once in a lifetime photo just cause you were trying to save a few dollars.

Has anyone used one of these Nixvue things?

i finally got mine installed on my computer yesterday. i bought mine used from nixvue, but had to send it back to have the battery fixed ... anyway, for some reason, my new computer doesn't recognize it, but my old one does. lucky they are networked. :) i plan on using it to download my photos now, too, because i don't like the cover for the USB connection that my camera has. it seems easier just to take out the smartmedia card instead.

so, i haven't used it for long, and haven't taken it on a trip yet, but i think it'll come in very handy on my next vacation, and it does seem to be working just fine (including verification) so far.

How much did you pay for your second hand Nixvue photo album? What are they worth new by the way?

i've had it for a while ... and with hindsight, buying second hand wasn't worth it. if i'd shopped around on the net i would've probably gotten if for a similar price. i can't remember just how much it was (i always try to forget how much i spent on this hobby of mine ;)
