Yesterday I headed down to Tacoma to try to capture something for the challenges. As usual I didn't have anything specific in mind, I just wanted to come home with some great photos. As I was exploring around I realized that the sun ight had a great chance of becoming spectacular as the sun was beganing to set. I was at a great location near Pt Defiance to photograph Mt. Rainier and the sunset which was the opposite direction from the mountain. Well, I thought to myself that I had already photographed the mountain from that location last year and I really didn't want a duplicate photo, plus there was hill in the foreground that I didn't want in the photo this time. So I decided to get in my car and drive to the top of the hill to get a really grand view of the mountain. Somehow while I was doing this I forgot about the sunset, all I could think about was finding a place to park so I could photograph the mountain. I started to panic a little when I noticed how fast the light was becoming perfect on the mountain. I rushed to park and walked quickly to where I thought there would be a great view but all I found was buildings or telephone lines in the way. Swearing to myself, I ran to my car and tried to find another location. At this time the mountain was looking spectacular but once again I could not find a good location to shoot from and as quickly as the perfect light appeared it was gone again. I was so digusted and I gave up on that idea and headed downtown to continue with my real assignment. As I was taking more photos near the Museum of Glass I noticed that Mt Rainier was, once again, shining with the perfect orange light. So, again, I took off running to my car to get my tripod and then to try to find a spot to shoot from. I thought I had found a good spot only to realize that there was a high wall that made it impossible to use my tripod. The light was starting to disappear again and I had no choice but to hold the camera above the wall as steady as I could and take the pictures. Here is the best photo I could get. I was so disappointed that I missed the perfect opportunity and was unable to use my tripod which would have allowed for a real slow shutter speed. I had to use Neatimage and boost the levels quite a bit in PS to even get this result. And that promising sunset? I saw it from my car as I was heading home, cursing to myself. It was so gorgeous.

The moral of this story. When you are photographing landscapes that require perfect lighting and timing than stick to a location that you know will work because by chasing around for the perfect location you just might miss it altogether. Know your locations ahead of time.

Tim, I can understand your frustration. I've been in the same situation on more than one occasion. Right in my own development, are some outragiously beautiful sunsets. The problem is all around the lakes are houses, and they just don't figure into my perfect sunset image.
Better luck next time!

It's a beautiful photo even if not what you originally envisioned. A couple of my best shots are of Mt. Rainier, but I'm usually about 40 miles away...
My usual problem is that I can see the sunset coming, and I know I'll have an obstructed view!

Thank you everyone. We have been having really aweful weather with lots of rain lately. As soon as it broke I was sprinting out the door with my camera and my dog. Come to think of it, it is sunny today too. Gotta go.

I think this photo is great. You should have saved it for the challenge in my opinion.

tim, a1, both of your shots would've gotten high marks from me in the landscape challenge :)

Both would have scored high with me too! Better than anything I've managed to muster this week.

i drove into the mountains today and THE SAME THING HAPPENED, i got up by Big Four mtn. just as the last rays of sunshine were coming down.defeated, i returned home with some measly shots of a pond that looked pale in contrast to anything i would consider submitting.. so it is a lesson i learned.. Leave Early! i got there too late from the snow on the road slowing me down.. i didnt want to slide off the road into the river... that would have made for quite the photo on the other hand.... ;)... but anyway, i was planning on taking a shot for the contest,, but maybe ill use one from the other night... you never saw anything from me here the other day... i figured people would have freaked out beacause it had a ferry in it and rocks.. but maybe im wrong. people here sometimes tend to be picky about sticking to the subject..
