I thought I will start this thread to get langdon's attention to introduce some badly needed changes to DPC. My top three changes I'd love to see:

1. have ONLY Expert and Minimal Editing, get rid off Basic and Advanced. A simpler system and produces many more OUTSTANDING results, even with photos taken with a single exposure without any digital manipulation, as all Expert editing challenges to date have proven

2. restore official DPL - it does increase PARTICIPATION and learning opportunities; if langdon is too busy why not use a keen volunteer to run it??!

3. increase the maximum submission size to 1600x1000 (avoids scrolling for portrait while maximizing landscape) and 1MB, storage is very cheap these days! This will allow for better QUALITY photos to be seen properly

Increase QUALITY and PARTICIPATION is my Motto!

List your own Top 3 Demands you would like see here! And let's make a DIFFERENCE!!

I'm not sure what the demands are... But tell me where to pitch my tent, and I'll join in!

1. SC Ruling Archive
2. Vote Sorting
3. Allow photographers to set the default background color (white, gray or black) and give the voters the option to toggle it (btw, the toggle links are below the title area).

You have posted these demands on the same day you started another thread wondering if you ought to be here at all. I think you have thus captured the intellectual rigor of the 'Occupy' movement perfectly. Well done.

Did you know that 1% of our members control 90% of the ribbons?!

Why on earth would you want such a divisive 'all or nothing' approach? The Expert editing means we end up with tons of fantastic digital art, but it's digital art by then. Yes I do like that Minimal is pure photography, plain and simple.

But what better way could possibly exist to deter new members from joining? Maybe lots of us simply don't have the time or interest to learn so much PS that we become proficient at Expert editing. And so long as heavy hitters like Judi and gyaban are members, why even bother?!

Uhm don't you mean all Minimal editing challenges?! Expert editing is unlimited in terms of images and effects used. Hell, in Minimal you can't even crop, fer gawds' sake. You can only shoot jpgs, and you're only allowed to rotate, resize and sharpen.

Langdon, if you ever see this thread, do keep in mind that MargaretN is from the Land Down Under, where everything is topsy-turvy...*running for cover now* and please don't ever sacrifice Basic and Advanced.

No offense, but #1 is utterly ridiculous. You don't want to turn this whole website into digital art one, do you? It's a photography website first. Advanced is where it should be and where it is most of the time.

I am neutral toward #2, its existence or lack of doesn't bother me.

#3 is a great suggestion, however I would be happy even with 950 pixels along the longest side instead of what we have now (800). I would really like to see this happen.

Well here are my three demands:

1) More food challenges. Advanced editing.

2) More wildlife challenges. Basic editing.

3) More wildlife eating food challenges. Minimal editing.

Eh wala! I have solved all this site's problems!

And oh yeah...

3b) Wildlife eating photographer challenge. Expert editing.

Lemme see... I have a 50/500 lens, I know where Snaffles goes to get some of her wildlife shots... Hmmmmmmmmm yes, except for the "Expert editing" I do believe I like this challenge. :O)

+1 too much expert editing and we'll be in danger of becoming another deviant art

Absolutely, that would be wonderful.
Personally, I am not too interested in scores but much more in constructive criticism and , while I am obviously glad to know if somebody liked my image, I would eagerly trade generic praise with specific, even if negative, remarks and suggestions.
In my admittedly very occasional experience with DPC, I have read often that voters are put off from providing helpful advice and opinions by the fact that many people are easily offended.
Were I only interested in generic praise I think I would be better off posting on Flickr, but I understand that not everybody value criticism.

The top comment on this is quite a good example, also considering I have only commented on very few challenges :)

As a DIY alternative to asking for changes to the site, what about appending a suffix to the title upon submission?
Something like 'CW' ("Comments/Criticism welcomed")
Title: Whatever my title is - CW

Ineed. Or alienate many who've been long time supporting members. I've learned to enjoy Basic, Advanced and Minimal. With all the expert editing challenges about. Would be nice to balance those out with some minimal ones for us on the other end of the spectrum. It's not a demand though ;). But in the past 3months we've had 5 expert(counting the female/male portait as one) and 1 minimal editing challenges.

Might as well get rid of all wildlife photography. You can't do birds, mammals, etc., well without cropping and some adjusting (unless you really have a big honkin' lens). And I'd rather take the shot instead of creating a fake wildlife shot. No basic and no advanced? I wouldn't bother shooting.

1. I wish I could search within my comments. Many times I wanted to go back and search for a comment made by a certain person. With 619 pages of comments, it's a little difficult to find anything.

2. Changes to the PM system: the ability to add someone to an existing PM. A "reply" button at the top so you don't have to scroll all the way down through a long list just to respond.

3. More squirrel challenges!

I don't understand this thinking at all. Several other users have won a ribbon over both of them in expert challenges but more to the point why feel like you shouldn't enter just because others may be better at expert editing. No reason anyone of us can't push ourselves to be better and so on. I love the competition it drives to to be better. But I also enter shots that are not mainstream but are appreciated by a target audience. Ribbons aren't everything.

Don't take this personally, it is not aimed at you but I had noticed several different comments by other users so this really is meant as a general statement.

eta added the rest of the comment

To be fair, you failed to include this portion of her comment:

That does change the context ever so slightly... :O)

Hehe! You should have read my group thread. I was very embarrassed entering that one! :)
