Wow, that looks much better than the original in my opinion.

How did you achieve the effect if you don't mind my asking.

Maybe something between both photos ... The boat (?) that appears as a silhouette in the original is maybe too "greyish" in the second one.
I prefer the original , a nice shot !

1. duplicate original layer
2. add gaussian blur with a radius of 100 pixels (could be more or less depending of the original dedfinition)
3. set this layers blending mode to screen
4. duplicate this layer and set the opacity at 50%
5. create a saturation layer and set the blending mode to multiply
6. set the opacity of this new layer to 75%
7. duplicate your original layre and drag it to the top
8. go to filter-others-high pass, set the radius to approx. 0.1% of the width of the document (i.e. the document is 2000 px width set the radius to 2)
9. set the blending mode for this layer at hard light.
10. make another adjustment layer. chose levels. set the black level at 20.
11. flatten your image and you're done.
