Ok photoshop junkies, I have a question.

What is the best way in photoshop (procedure, tools, filters, etc...) that you have found to turn a color photo into a good black and white photo.

I have tried many different procedures, but I just cannot get the good quality black and white picture. Just want to see if anyone has any good advice.

Thanks,
cw

be prepared for about a thousand different "best" ways.

I prefer to use the duotone method (quadtone actually)

first convert to greyscale (image-->mode-->greyscale)

then convert to duotone (image-->mode-->duotone)

it will allow you to load one of hundreds of different duotones. From straight greyscale up to four colours in a quadtone. This gives the most flexibility, and the greatest tonal range.

You can also just stick with greyscale (simplest) or try the channel mixer (image-->adjustments-->channel mixer). make sure you click the monochrome checkbox at the bottom.

Pedro's always look great...take his advice. I am too confused by all the buttons and icons in PS to do much more than either greyscale mode or "desaturate image" and then tweak the levels. LOL ;o)

I use the channel mixer to desaturate... usually favouring a heavy emphasis towards the red channel, then use the Colour Balance tool to play around with the seperate shadows, midtones and highlights. Paradoxically, once I've played around with the colours, it ends up looking more 'black and white' than when I converted it in the channel mixer.

check out bill's B&W action so easy, and great results.

What does it do (apart from the obvious)? It doesn't explain what it does...
