Cognizant of that possibility, I'm trying to sort-and-vote in the same day, and I wouldn't attempt this on the last day before deadline.

It was 6.4xxx at 20 votes but it is still much higher now than I had expected.

Okay! All the sorting and comparing is done, everyone's in their final slot, or close to it barring adjustments in the best-of-show category. All the 1's and 2's have come and gone :-)

It's been an interesting and instructive way of voting free study. I'll probably do it this way again :-)

very interesting way to vote. i might try it next month. it's almost like a dog show. all the breeds are put into their own catagory to compete against each other, then, the best in each go into the best of show catagory. the best in show peeps should get awarded some kind of bear-bling...like maybe a paw or something.

that's a good idea: I do have rarely-awarded gold, silver, and bronze paws...

Following the new trend. I have 'voted' on all of the images by categorizing them with a 'score'.

1- landscapes
2- animals
3- macro-flowers
4- people
5- everything else

So the first run through looks horrible. I don't see any images in this challenge that I will give a final score of below 5. It sure wrecks people's psyche's when they see the effect that a low vote gives to their score. I have experienced this as my score has been all over the place.

votes given to date:

You have rated 310 of 310 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 2.7161.

There are a LOT of landscapes in this challenge!

I'm hoping I'm one of your 1's or 2's, since I just got hit by one :(

Bear with me. I'll re-vote the category that has the fewest entries first. Probably tonight. Sheesh, I just voted on 310 images ;-)

Why not use 10 instead of 1 to mark them?
11/02/2011 08:52:49 PM · #138
Would you rather your score go up? or down?

I was hoping you would miss a few. It is better to forget about 10 than 1 :)

Evidently not, OR I missed it in the first pass-through and it never got sorted 1 to begin with.

In any event, I've now promoted all the animal pictures as well, so nobody has received a 1 or a 2 from me at this point in this challenge.

People pix are next, so all you people pix people, if you get hammered tonight, it may be me and it will be reversed :-)

R.

Are you telling the truth?

Sure am! When I vote I practically never give out a vote less than 4. Maybe a few 3's, only very rarely a 2, and maybe a single 1 all year for an image that pushed all the wrong buttons in me. In this FS, I "sorted" all of what I saw as "scapes" into the 1-slot and all of what I saw as "animal shots" into the 2-slot so I could easily compare scapes to scapes and animals to animals. I have now scored all the scapes into their appropriate slots (according to my aesthetic), and ditto the animals. So no scape or animal has received less than a 3 from me, and there was only one of those; the rest are all 4-or-higher.

Next I will sort the people into 1's and the flowers-and-macros into 2's and then compare them to their peers and reassign them. Whatever's left over, I'll dop as its own "miscel;l;aneous" group.

Finally, I'll compare my high-scoring images to each other and re-rank as needed to produce a valid (for me) "Best in Show" ranking...

Then I'll sit back and ponder whether this semi-organized approach is worth the minor uproar it's apparently caused :-)

R.

There is only 1 (24th) in the 50 votes monitoring. "Best in show" is good as what normally apply in a single wide category photo contest. Best of 2 similar image against each for the top, same to 2nd and 3rd places. The loser of the 1st go to 4th place and so on the 2nd and 3rd.

But here in FS all entries got it ranking according to the qualities of the image. It may encourage.... choose few best in show and hammered the rest until to lowest score. I hope you are not wrong by encouraging this approach in DPC. There is no second 1 vote kick in during your voting. sorry for my bad grammar.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Let me explain, again, what I am doing.

I have ranked all the "scapes" as if they were their own challenge/. I have ranked all the animal shots as if they were their own challenge. And so forth and so on.

Now, my next step is to compare my top-scoring images and decide, amongst the 10's and the 9's and the 8's, my "Best of Show" images and adjust scores as needed to reflect that ranking. I may, or may not, award Bear Paws to these:

The question would be, do I award the paws in their categories (Best Landscape) or as Best-of-Show awards?

Dropped 0.2 in ten votes... what's happening?! :(

Wow, the scoring is brutal. I make no claims to having a top scoring photo, but it's certainly not a sub-5 shot.

Yes brutal is right. Mine is falling with every vote and I can only hope it is people trying this new way of voting all categories together and then sorting from there...
