Also, it breaks the quite intimidating 300 entries into manageable groups. I may do something similar when I vote tonight.

It wasn't my idea, for the record: Pixelpig suggested it in this thread.

It's probably a big defect in my character, but landscapes do nothing for me, so I vote them off the screen (kind of like eating all the peas on my plate first). After they're all together, I compare them as a group & give the one I like the best the highest vote among the landscapes. Then I vote all the people into a group so I can compare & rank them. I do the same with the animals & bugs & flowers. Flowers are usually only about 3-4% of the entries, but they are my favorite part of a FS. The rest is an interesting collection of non-comparable shots which I vote one at a time. At the end, they're all ranked & then I give it a final review. All my 10's get compared & votes adjusted. All the 9's & so on. I change my vote several times during this process.

I would describe DPC as landscape-dominated but with a coterie of free spirits. Most of my learning & growth comes from the example set by the free spirits.

Although, obviously, landscapes are very high on my personal-preference list so I'm not gonna sweep them out of the way :-) Plus, I'd disagree with your statement that DPC is landscape-dominated... Penny has a theory that we each tend to think DPC is heavily-populated by whatever it is we tend to like least :-)

Well, I just gave all the landscapes a 1 :-) So far, so good. For the record, that represents 29% of the entries, plus probably a tad more, since a few of them I have consulted on so I don't vote those. The rest of you landscapers, fear not! I'll be adjusting you within a day or two :-)

So if your image is a landscape image and you feel like shooting someone (with a firearm) relax: relief will be forthcoming as I rank the landscapes against themselves :-)

Meanwhile, back at the farm, I'm about to give 2's to all the animal shots (including birds and insects) so those of you who did THOSE, don't panic. I'll take care of you too before voting closes.

A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR THE BEAR!
Have a nice week :-)

If my score stays in this area (6.59) I am heading for a new PB! I hope I didn't just put the posting jinx on it! Lol

Bear_Music I think I'll adopt your voting procedure :) Thanks!

Evidently not, OR I missed it in the first pass-through and it never got sorted 1 to begin with.

In any event, I've now promoted all the animal pictures as well, so nobody has received a 1 or a 2 from me at this point in this challenge.

People pix are next, so all you people pix people, if you get hammered tonight, it may be me and it will be reversed :-)

Whilst this is a good idea in ways - what happens if you vote all landscapes one, then for one reason or another you don`t get a chance to go back and change your vote (internet down, power cut, computer malfunction, general life business etc.) - highly doubtful, but could happen.

Oh, I see! Thanks for the links :-) I'm behind a shitty firewall and proxy at work atm, but I might try it out at home sometime.

If you need to go via a proxy server here's the solution you can. Basically, so long as you can access DP Challenge off a browser you can use my program.

I knew this wasn't going to be my best FS of the year, so I must be happy of my 6.3+ score. My goal was to get 6.1+ score because I wanna hold my top ten in the FSM :)

Next month I'll try something better!

Just got one of the nicest comments I've ever received on my FS.

I am no longer complaining about my score. =)

I would rather people take the time to think about my photographs and comment on the feelings they evoke than receive a 6 any day. =)

Score has been yo-yo'ing a lot but seems to have settled down in to the 5.5 range now. Would be nice to receive some comments though. I guess there's not much to say about a generic landscape shot.

Are you telling the truth?

Sure am! When I vote I practically never give out a vote less than 4. Maybe a few 3's, only very rarely a 2, and maybe a single 1 all year for an image that pushed all the wrong buttons in me. In this FS, I "sorted" all of what I saw as "scapes" into the 1-slot and all of what I saw as "animal shots" into the 2-slot so I could easily compare scapes to scapes and animals to animals. I have now scored all the scapes into their appropriate slots (according to my aesthetic), and ditto the animals. So no scape or animal has received less than a 3 from me, and there was only one of those; the rest are all 4-or-higher.

Next I will sort the people into 1's and the flowers-and-macros into 2's and then compare them to their peers and reassign them. Whatever's left over, I'll dop as its own "miscel;l;aneous" group.

Finally, I'll compare my high-scoring images to each other and re-rank as needed to produce a valid (for me) "Best in Show" ranking...

Then I'll sit back and ponder whether this semi-organized approach is worth the minor uproar it's apparently caused :-)
