If the one of the two CURRENT challenges is the challenge you are entered into, the Challenges Entered will read 0 until the end of the challenge. That data updates after the challenge results post. If you have entered a previous challenge that has already completed and it still says 0, you might let D&L or some SC member know. :o)

You're on the wrong page. Go to "My Home" after you are logged in and on the left hand side will be the stats for the current challenge.

I know what you mean, but what about all the mediocre shots? There are a lot of shots that I find to be pretty average. I usually give those photographs 5's or 6's...I think some people are a lot pickier when it comes to voting.

The truth of the matter is that it is not over until the fat lady sings.
To follow early scores is to tie your emotional strings to the update button. To try and figure how members vote is also hopeless. To question yourself about your picture is also hopeless unless you see how you could have done it better.
The best photo does not always win and often a lemon gets by because it touched on some tender chord on the collective unconscious of the voting group.

Ever notice that once you are through and proud of your entry you upload it. Then comes the day of the challenge and bingo....you look and look at the entries and see that your entry is no longer as hot as you thought. A lot of other members have outdone you. And then the voting begins....you feel you need a vindication, more like an early preview. Okay you say, my entry is not hot, hot, like some of these others, but hey, it is a good picture, meets the challenge and is well exposed. You start high and then it drops and you ask yourself, why is this second block of voters so different than the first. Suddenly you feel slighted....what will be will be. You did all you could and now it goes up before the members. Note some of the comments from those that have not even entered a challange. Do they know just how nuch time and how many problems you had to solve. Where is his picture?

Yes, it may first appear unfair. But this is exactly what competition is. Look, I have presented images that I thought would have the voter asking how did he do that? Look the foreground is well lit, yet no shadows. How did he light the background......no, no. It would be incorrect to say that many voters are ignorant or that your effort has gone right past their heads.....but 90 percent of the time the fault lies with us. This is a competition and it involves ideas, technique and presentation. It is in the latter that we must often fail.

Your picture must not only be good, it must be superb to score high. The consolation is that these are ungoing challenges with one following the other. My suggestion, again, is to study challenges completed in detail and try to determine why some pictures reached the top. But mostly to learn how others have solved the problem and how they presented their ideas. Believe me, the best lesson comes from looking at the works of others.

My score is as predicted:

0 / 0.0000 / 0

And shall be the same for the forseeable challenges.

Graphicfunk and laurielblack, of course you are right and your words are wise, And I agree, study the winners -- the top twenty or thirty images in each challenge to learn a lot. On that note, however, I have a pet peeve, and that's the photographer who DOES do something unusual in lighting, or some other technique, but doesn't explain it in the box under the photo. The darn N/A pops up. And yes, I'm guilty of puting n/a in there, but then again, I haven't had a fascinating technique to share! lol

So, it's not always possible to learn as much as one might want to learn simply by studing the images. Just saying...

This is only my second challenge entered and what I saw on my first picture was that after the first few hours of voting my average score only changed about .2 +/-. Is this typical or would I normally see my average vote with a wider "swing" margin if you know what I mean? I guess I'm really hoping that there is a slight chance of my current entry to top a 5.

That's ok though, I didn't like my own photo. It was my first time trying this type of image and I just could not get it do do what I wanted. I hope that the comments will help me improve! I have already learnt a lot from the first comment.

I tried voting on a curve at first, but it was too difficult trying to slide images up and down the scale. Now I try to use a fixed criteria:
10. Gallery quality
09. Good enough to feature on DPCPrints
08. Good enough to sell on DPCPrints
07. Good photograph, but needs some "wow"
06. Better than average, but needs a little work
05. Good effort, but needs work on the basics
04. Snapshot, missing most photograph basics
03. Major photographic problems are evident
02. Unacceptable level of quality
01. Misuse of dpchallenge

I must have too open of a mind. I figured water was an every day object I mean it is all over the place and a very important every day object in our lives. The challenge said an everyday object that almost everyone would recognize. I took a picture of water in a different way which is still WATER.

I am getting many comments that it doesn't fit the challenge. How can it not fit the challenge? Its water. The focus is it is water, it comes in many forms in our lives.

Like I said maybe it is just me having to open of a mind. I didn't think to use water I would have to limit myself to a faucet or a glass.

Both comments were very positive, but such a low score on an image i really like is a bit depressing. Oh well. No "did not meet the challenge" but maybe that's where the low votes are and they just didn't comment.

Courtnee, first, it's generally not cool to mention the specific photo during the challange, but regardless, some people are more flexible in what they think of as an object, and the highest votes will likely go to interesting compositions of truly every day use items of an inanimate nature (pencils, razors, etc), regardless of the flexible nature of the challange.

You probably shouldn't point out your picture for anonymity reasons. But I thnk the problem is that voters are probably looking at your shot and not seeing "water", but rather {edit}.

I agree with you on the pointing out the picture so I changed my post to just talk about water. I do agree some what of what you say. I just feel it's still water. thanks though.

Ok. I feel better now. This was my first reluctant, "un"confident entry, and in fact, I just got my first digital camera last weekend. Seeing others' agony over not having a "10" (or even a "5") is somehow strangely comforting. Thanks for the indirect encouragement to keep trying! :)

It would be better to leave such a discriptive comment of your photo in the current challenge untill after voting is completed I think.

I know it can be frustrating at times when your own idea seems like it hits you in the face and no one else seems to get it! But I think that helps with molding you own perspective on things. Bob

I've only gotten four comments so far. Four wouldn't be bad except that two are the kind of pointless comments that say nothing about how the commenter feels about the image. One was actually a question that really had very little bearing on anything except to satisfy the person's curiosity. I don't mind smart-ass comments about the subject and answering questions but how about letting me know what you think of the image while you're at it?

The fourth comment simply wasn't helpful because the suggestion was regarding something that I didn't agree with that the commenter had just received several (6) comments about for his image in the chocolate challenge.

I like this method of voting, it everyone did it we would have more consistant results. I think it's kinda funny how the top finishers usually only have a low 7 score most of the time. You would think that a blue ribbon winner would have at least a 8 or 9 score.

If I sound cranky its because I had a sleepless night and finally gave up and got up at 6 a.m. Very early for me. I'll feel better after everyone has voted on every image and my score goes back up to 5+. Hint hint!

I finished voting on all the entries with revisions. Whew!
