Back down to a little better than my norm now, 5.8XX but it was nice while it lasted. :-)

I didn't check my score until around 2 am and at that time it was 5.3333. This morning, it had dropped to 5.12 and now it is at 5.10. Personally, I don't think it deserves to be falling that low. I generally don't get too peeved about my score lately, but for me to have dropped that low with only 29 votes, someone must have really clobbered me. I'm not a math person so I could be wrong. The other possibility,I suppose is that I've gotten a few really high votes and then some fives. I'm just disappointed to see it drop so far. I cringed when I saw the amount of entries there are to vote on. 363! I've voted on 204 so far.

One comment so far.

sometimes it is cathartic to enter a stinker, in my case that is 9 out of ten challenges. But remember, if one person likes it, is impressed or amused by it, thats what we do it for.

This is too weird. Will be my lowest score yet. But here's the kicker.
I love the picture!!!! Go figure.
Got a good comment on it that had criticism that proved very useful.
Taking a picture is like playing golf sometimes. So many different aspects to keep in mind and if you forget one of them, your in the rough.!

It's obvious people didn't get what i was going for and I anticipated that.
I absolutely love the photo, as I was able to achieve the exact style I was going for
in under an hour of prep and processing. I reshot afterwards to get my focus
and DOF exactly how I wanted it, but otherwise it's virtually indistinguishable
from the submitted image.

I know, I know... mainstream = high score.
this was about art.

When I first looked after ~25 votes the score was around 6,9 but have been constantly falling and I´m starting to bite my nails. But I shouldn´t disgraceful, could end up with my highest score.

This is the first time I felt I had gone beyond a snapshoot and created a real photograph. I was able to visualize the shot before grabbing the camera and then worked to match what I saw in my head. Seemed like I had reached a milestone...... and I'm getting hammered.

Maybe a milestone in failure rather than in becoming a photographer.

I'm terribly disappointed, so far. My score keeps dropping. When I first checked it at around 2 am,it was 5.3333. Even that score was a bit disappointing because I really feel this is a good photo for the challenge.
Yesterday I watched my DPC Album score drop from 5.88 (my highest so far) to its current 5.64. At least with that photo I've already gotten 9 extremely positive comments and only 1 kind of dumb one.

I don't see how anyone can give me less than a 5 for my entry. It is very clearly an object. I kept to a very narrow definition of the term to avoid obtuseness. My image is sharp, my composition tidy and very simple. Maybe it is too simple? I have a new camera so noise has not been an issue as it has been for me in the past. I can understand some people finding the subject matter mundane but, after all, the title of the challenge is Everyday Objects. I got one very helpful, mostly positive comment and one obtuse comment.

I know I sound whiney. I can't help it. It is a gloomy, cold day and I got out of bed at 6 am after getting no sleep (thinking about an idea for the Miniature challenge and wondering if my husband will kill me if I purchase a pet mouse for the photo). My consolation is there are a lot of images to vote on which is probably slowing things down for this challenge. I hope everyone votes on as many as possible. There are some really nice photos for this challenge. Very nice for an Open challenge. I've already given six 7's, three 8's and (gasp) one 9. That 9 may yet get upped to a 10. Anyone who has read my comments regarding my voting style will know that 9's a rare for me. I've also given twenty-five 6's. Some of those might get revised to 7's. Nothing is going down from that group or my 5's.

This is a nice kind of challenge because it is close to being a free study. I say close because in voting, I'm keeping to a fairly narrow idea of what an object is compared to what was discussed on another thread. I don't consider living things to be objects. Nor do I consider the elements water, air, and fire to be objects. I honestly don't believe the council members who came up with the challenge were thinking of these things as objects. The way I see it, that still leaves a tremendous amount of subject matter to photograph and no one should have felt so boxed in by this challenge that they had to resort to shoehorning.

I am going to try really hard to vote on all the entries in this challenge. I couldn't take chocolate after awhile (I wound up not even making the 20% requirement) and I didn't manage all of Words but I'm determined to see this one through. I've already finished voting for the Member challenge so I've got time.

I challenge everyone reading this thread to get out there and vote, vote, vote!

I feel some of the same things as you, Melismatica. I'm not terribly disappointed, because my skin has gotten thicker over 22 challenges. But I'm watching my score sink through the 5's, entering the quicksand at 5.000, and now, dropping slowly into the high 4's. Where it will end up is anyone's guess!

There's something that puzzles me. When you (the voter) come across a photo that obviously meets the challenge (I know mine does; it's truly an everyday object in every sense of the word), and is well photographed (it's in focus, proper depth of field, well composed shot, etc.) and simply lacks the WOW factor, what do you vote it as? Shouldn't that be at least a 5?

Okay, done grumbling. But I'd really love to hear some opinions on my question.

I am in exactly the same place with the same question - in my mind that is at least a 5. I usually give a 5 even if there are a couple photographic flaws as long as the photo is on the topic.

wow...i didnt realize people didnt give at least one 10 per challenge..arent you voting for the best picture for that specific challenge? why would a 9 be rare? dont you have a favorite for every challenge? shouldnt that "favorite" get a 10?

I think a part of the answer might be that the scale is really 1-7 in the sense that we never see a ribbon with a score of 9 or 10 (for obvious reasons of averaging). But psychologically, I think the scale has been reduced and that "average" to a lot of people is a 4 when they score. Add to that that the "bar has been raised" and a "5" in reality "just isn't good enough" anymore?

That brings up another question I have seen raised before. Do you vote 1-10 on a particular group of photos (as in, what is the best of this group in this challenge) or do you vote universally in challenges (would this be a 10 if there were "better" competing photos?).

Seems to be getting balanced know. Asume I´ll end up with 6,0-6,5. Could easely beat my highest score untill now.
Think I´m starting to get better feeling about what will score good here. Hopefully I´m also improving as a photographerf. Live and learn.

My 2 cents...(well, more than 2, but bear with me)

Over the past 3 months I have learned a tremendous amount of information relating to photography, but even more about human nature. I have learned that "well-photographed" and "meeting the challenge" are very subjective.

"Well-photographed"...let's see. Some voters love to have things centered. It makes them feel better about the shot...balanced or something or other. Some voters like off-centered subjects. Some like extreme angles or leading lines. Some like color. Some like black and white. Some like high key. Some like perfect exposure. Some like oddball subjects never seen before. Some like standard studio-type or stock shots. I could go on for days.

"Meeting the challenge" is just as subjective. Some like verbatim, expected, predictable, this-is-exactly-what-the-challenge-said type shots. Some like to be wowed. Some like controversy. Some like the whole outside-the-box approach. Some hate that. The everyday object challenge is a perfect example for my next point...some voters don't have a wide viewpoint on the world as it relates to what is "everyday" for other cultures, communities, or peoples. Some have a very open mind regarding the same issue. Some vote on the challenges in such a way that their votes pit each photograph against one another..."this one sucks, but not as bad as that one, so it gets a 2...this one is great, but not as great as that one, so it gets an 8" and so on. Some vote on each image as an individual image, not relating it at all to previous or future images. Some give only 1 10 per challenge, some give 50. Same with 1s. It's all subjective, in the mind of whoever it is...and their past experiences, evironment, and state of being all influence their decisions as to what number to click.

I could go on for days...and you guys know this anyway, so I'll hush my mouth...but this is why good photos get 5s and below...because that's human nature. At least that's how I see it.

That is not the way I approach the 1-10 scale. I don't pick a favorite and then automatically determine it deserves a 10. I vote on each image on where I feel it fits on a scale of 1-10. Just because I think a photo is the best of the bunch doesn't mean I think it merits a 10. There has been one memorable open challenges where the highest vote I gave was 6.

It's my fourth challenge, but that's my typical score. How on earth am I going to improve? I guess experience.

Just to clarify that with my method of voting, it is possible (although not likely) for me to give more than one photo a 10. I have certainly given more than one photo in a challenge a 9 (for the June Free Study I gave two 9's) for instance. I use the 1-10 scale very universally. A 10 would have to be something really, really special and impressive to me. The photo in Everyday Objects that I am considering upping to a 10 is close to approaching extraordinary to me. An ordinary object, in the eye of this photographer, has transcended its familiar purpose and been elevated to pure beauty of form. I just want to view it a few more times to be sure I'm not imagining this before I give it a 10.

Gee.... I'm blushing, melismatica. ...I'll be watching (with baited breath, of course) for that promotion to a 10. Tnx ;-)

if i dont really like an image i give it a 4, if i like it quite a lot
i give it a 7, and if it takes my breath away i give it a 10...

07/28/2004 02:55:20 PM · #75
It says
Challenges Entered: 0
Is that where I should be able to click and see results ?
I can see my photo in the contest.
Thanks
