I get less battery life with IS mode turned on, but I can shoot handheld at a half second shutter.

Certainly using IS drains the battery more quickly. But you can select when it is on or off, so you can limit this effect.

Using the LCD drains the battery more quickly.

Using the backlight drains the battery more quickly.

Using the flash drains the battery more quickly.

Using AF drains the battery more quickly.

Taking pictures and writing to the CF card also drains the battery.

I can get between 200 and 500 shots per battery from my D60, depending on how I'm using it. Each of the battery drains, other than the last in the list can be avoided or controlled by camera settings.

I say carry a few spare batteries and enjoy the features of the camera (that you paid for).
