I have to admit I do agree with Bear (good to see you back btw) to an extent, that it's cruel to make fun of people who look weird or dress oddly by our standards. But, for whatever reason, it seems to be a cultural norm for people to neglect their appearance when they go there. I've even heard people say: 'Oh, don't bother dressing up, we're just going to Wal-Mart'. It's a fine line: is it any more or less disrespectful than shooting people waiting at a bus stop, or a homeless person rooting through a dumpster?

There is a difference between street humor that we might stumble upon and deliberately clumping a group of people into a stereotype. Exploiting this less than perfect group (per the link, not my opinion) as a challenge subject is difficult for me to comprehend. I would rather mock WalMart. ;)

Bold is by me.

What is it you were trying to say exactly in french?

The linked website is one of the most mean-spirited exercises I have ever encountered; it's devoted entirely to the anonymous publication of sneak, phone-cam pictures of obese, ugly, oddly-dressed, or otherwise (apparently) ridiculous-in-the-poster's-eyes specimens of humanity.

Some respondents in this thread seem to think the challenge is about making fun of Walmart (currently a national sport of sorts, and with good reason IMO), but actually the referenced site's about being mean to people who aren't "normal" or "beautiful" enough for you.

I'd be the first to acknowledge that probably ALL of us, at one time or another, have looked at another human and said "Ewwwwww...." but still, come ON. Do we really want our site sponsoring an organized challenge that encourages us to make fun of people who don't meet our personal aesthetic standards?

R.

Yes, I was hoping somewhere there might be a walmart photo that reveals the walmart side of ourselves... On the other hand, I am simply intrigued by little kids who like riding in shopping carts or careening down empty aisles on very smooth and tidy floors, the patterns of stacked goods, and maybe our utter alienation from these very anonymous goods, brand named or not, themselves.

one2one, I was trying to disassociate myself from the cruelty of the walmart people photos, a little bit self-righteously perhaps.

I know what you mean, I really enjoyed going through the local "job lot" store a couple of years ago shooting for the Tilted II challenge, and ending up with this...

I was the one that stared this thread. But I saw two different tyoes of shots onn that webbsite. One type was the meanspirited kinds, making fun of people. That wasn't what interested me.

I thought the eccentric, qjirky shots were interestting. It's a place where you can such an interesting mix of people. The people watching is much more interesting, just because there's more people. A picture of an overweight woman with everything hanging out isn't what I had in mind posting this. But a guy with a tattoo on his neck of a bleeding bullet hole could be a fascinating shot. I think it could be an interesting challenge, and certainly doesn't have to be a mean-spirited challenge.

But whatever.... :)

There ya go! How about "At the Market" which would be more globally inclusive.

Maybe. Or "At the Big Store." Looks like you already own a lot of it!

While the homeless are a popular subject, when viewing images of them I usually get a sense of empathy, a feeling of societal failure and a notion of "There but for the grace of God, go I".

When viewing images of overweight women in flesh colored stretch pants pushing over flowing carts of cheaply made goods, I am rarely struck with a sense of empathy, unless it is the "sucks to be you" school of empathy. While I admit to enjoying the occasional stunned giggle of bitchy superiority, I don't think such works are meant to bring out the pure light of empathy.

This could be sort of a thread hijack.
Maybe something on the order of the photos on this site See, I Fixed It would make a more universally acceptable challenge.
Some of the "fixes" are insanely dangerous or rediculous, but some are almost genious. Surely most of us who want to enter would be able to find something that would fit the challenge.

I've been to the peopleofwalmart site and it certainly is entertaining. Bear is correct how it can be mean spirited and I'm guessing that's the intent of most of the people who post to the site. However I find it compelling, not to make fun of the people but to celebrate their uniqueness. Many of the people posted to the site do their own thing and don't give a hoot about what others think; I hope one day I could have that same level of confidence.

Walmart has a photography policy so good luck with anything bigger than your cell phone.

gee, thanks guys. I was hoping for some serious avant guard nouvelle magasin de boiture, and maybe even some trenchant mercantile deconstruction.

Try your local French Restaurant. All I got is steak and potatoes.

Isn't that what WalMart does to all the local independent merchants when it arrives in town?
