Damned if you do, damned if you don't. With the increasing costs of licensing that Netflix is going to be suffering, it's amazing it isn't damn near $100 a month, and people quibble over an increase from $8 to $16 without really thinking about why.

True, the splitting of the company is a little mind-boggling, but for my part I'll continue to support Netflix and/or any company that tries their damnedest to give me content for a minimal price, instead of the rest of the entertainment industry's flat stubborness to keep trying to charge people $30 PER MOVIE and then bending over companies like Netflix when they try and usher in the future with greed and unreasonably gigantic licensing fees.

Netflix is as much a 'victim' here as any of you people think you are.

Agree with a lot of what you say but I ain't defending netflix in this one.... Not playing the victim either... There are better options at the price point they want to play in for streaming as a stand alone - their main benefit to me was the integration between stream and mail. The split of the queues is a big deal.... even if they don't want to admit it. The latest price jump caused me to drop streaming due to their lack of content for what I want to watch - I kept mail (for now).

As a programmer - There are FAR better ways that can be handled... a cross functional pair of website with shared id's and queues is perfectly workable - until they find someone to buy the dvd business which is the point of the split IMO at which point you disconnect that linkage. They also killed the save queue for streaming causing a lot of people to have FAR less then 500 slots now available.

As a customer - There are FAR better ways to communicate something like this. I don't take Hubris well and that thing drips with it for me. The wording could be far better - like it's done by an intern PR person.

As a photographer - Did you see that crap that passed for a video.... Actions speak louder then words and the production quality of that screams. Can you see Apple putting out something like that??

Here is the problem, netflix signs up all these customers, kills off blockbuster and moves into the world of streaming, them as then try to get more content they negotiate things like not making new releases available for 30 days. slowly they keep bumping prices and we all take it becuase its to be expected. then just a few months after a price hike they drastically increase pricing all while losing a large portion of content and in these tough time they cant understand that the customers considered the streaming a luxury and aren't going to pay for it any longer? next they cut streaming to multiple boxes unless you have a higher tiered dvd plan, instead of blocking multiple IPs, they block multiple devices. Now out of the blue they split off into to separate companies which in all intents and purposes is a way to ditch their inventory of dvds and try to drive to people to streaming where its much cheaper since they dont have to pay postage and processing.

all this was done with bombshell dropping to the customers, and you expect them not to incur any backlash.

i understand why they are doing what they are doing, but its how they are doing it that irks me. they are out of touch with their base.

I cancelled my membership today. I barely used it and then I get that letter. I will wait and see what happens in the industry. Maybe it will get good again.

Sorry for bringing this up again...

We have Netflix (both services) and probably will drop them after this. We already subscribe to Amazon Prime for the mailing rates, etc...haven't paid attention to their movie service.

Anyone have experience with Amazon Prime for streaming media? Thanks.

I have a trial prime membership and plan to add a full membership at the end of this month (my trial is up). You do NOT get free streaming on the trial BUT I was able to get thru the setup on my Sony Blueray without any real issue. I was able to play a free trailer no prob. The quality was equal or better to netflix from the playing I have done.

As far as selection... for ME.... It's better in some places and worse then others but overall slightly better then Netflix streaming. I spent some time going thru my dvd queue and the shows we normally watch and it was pretty good. On a total basis, nf has a better range but it really depends on what your watching.

Edit: Right now, I am keeping only the dvd mailers... but thinking and looking around. Blockbuster has an equal service (and I used them for a year or more a while back) but it's a little more $ then netflix..... I dropped it because the local "blockbuster" would not allow the fetures any more (drop off and free local rental while waiting for the mail).

Well you can check it out easily...if you pay for Amazon prime, it's free.

I have Amazon prime, but I have a free account, and they don't include it with those.

Funny story.....

I heard about the split....HERE!

Apparently, as I just dug through the mailbox, the letter was tagged as SPAM and shunted. Just read it.

My take on "There are no pricing changes (we’re done with that!). If you subscribe to both services you will have two entries on your credit card statement, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. The total will be the same as your current charges. "

Is: The price will be the same....for now, a short time, but expect the price to increase. The separate cost structure and marketing will no doubt screw with the wallet.

actually i need to look into it, but now that the services are split i may be able to actually cut back on my dvd plan, i had kept it at 2 at a time, unlimited per month based on the unlimited streaming. now i may be able to shave off a few bucks :)

I watched the CEO video last night. And it's train wreck stuff. Straight out of the 'what not to say to your customers, and how not to say it' handbook.

The only thing he was actually apologising for (and he emphasised this numerous times) was the way he communicated the split.

And the guy he introduced who's taking over the DVD side. What charisma! He's a natural. You get the vibe he knows he's got 6 months max left in the job.

One of the biggest things I have heard about for Netflix though is the fact that their licensing costs of $180 million in 2010 will increase to an estimated $1.98 billion this year. Studios want their cut too and after Netflix rapid rise they would certainly want a much larger piece. Problem is, too big of piece and the source of your meals dies off. And when your costs go up that much and you only made $161 million in 2010 in the first place that is a big issue.

Regardless, if there is a better service for a better price, people will vote with their wallets.

I have the streaming service, but I think I've watched everything I wanted to see. Blockbuster actually sent a collection agency after me a few years ago over a $1.29 late fee I didn't know I had so they can suck it. And almost every dvd I rent from Redbox is too scratched up to play without skipping if it loads at all. Guess I'll just bootleg the movies and shows I want go see
