I hadn't tried netflix, and I was just about to. Not going to bother now...

It's always easy to cancel this stuff because no one's goal in life is to "sit in front of the TV as much as possible" … ;)

I dropped NF DVD service but I'll hang on to the on Demand stuff for my kids - Strawberry Shortcake is pretty cool ;). It really is a good value if you use it.
But the price increase and goofy email they sent inspired me to try HBO - getting it for less that 7$ / month for the first 4 months. includes HBO on the go and on demand. Should be a nice replacement to getting DVDs in the mail.

EDIT to say:
I think one of the main problems with Netflix is that people are committing to something yet they don't know what to expect. Like which DVDs and shows will be available and when.

Never got a) any notification of the increase in price, or b) any apology. If I hadn't read this story here on DPC I would've been oblivious to the significant increase in monthly billing.

i dont know why, i get notifications all the time when they receive and send my dvds, but i also didn't get the price increase email either, i read about that online somewhere.

Getting the price increase emails is now a separate service called "QuickSkru". ;)

Haha!

Being in Canada, I've never used Netflix due to protectionist internet download caps, and a stupidly slow and unreliable postal system.

Seems like something must've been forced on Netflix to alienate their customers so badly.

Perhaps it was something better known as the Board of Directors. Never know...they like mo-ney!

My understanding is that they *had* a very successful business model that was destroying all their competitors (hence their rapid market share prices). As a result, they felt they had a product they felt their customers would be willing to pay the extra for. Seems not, considering the reports of huge number of members abandoning ship and the plummeting share prices.

Their actions are definitely a boon for Redbox!

I think it's something like a $4/mo increase for me.

Compared to cable at $100+ per month, it's still a bargain.

Besides, they have Pucca streaming...good stuff

It would be interesting to know how much Reed Hastings (CEO) lost on paper as a result of this move...but I can't find how much stock he owns anywhere. :(

This article has an interesting quote:

"Warren Buffett once said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently.”"

I kept my streaming, canceled my DVD- Redbox and Blockbuster box are cheaper options for DVD's and you get newer movies faster....

I'm still on the fence about whether to keep netflix or not. We only have basic cable so it is nice to have some extra kids shows on hand. But their selection is horrible, luckily 3 year olds don't care if they watch the same thing over and over. Right now I am getting some older seasons of t.v shows I want to watch on DVD but once I run out of those I don't know if it will be worth it anymore.

I hear digital Over The Air (get an antenna and it's free) is often better quality high-def signal than satellite or cable, which serve up compressed high-def.

Maybe I should start up "AirFlix" and serve all this NetFlix stuff OTA.

... dang... airflix.com is already registered. >:-(

strangely i didn't get any apology emails. in fact i don't really pay attention the media so i never knew about their rate hike. i just checked my account and i guess because i'm on the lowest option possible (2 movies a month, 1 at a time) at $4.99, my rate doesn't go up? the last billing statement which was after the increase was instated showed the same charge as before.

if it goes up, i'm cancelling it though.

I think the new billing kicks in at the end of September.

I've been a Netflix guy for 8-10 years, but now I'm not so sure. I'm gonna see how it shakes out and especially how much they lose on their streaming content if they lose Starz.

Netflix does have a very good selection of independent stuff and I have very much enjoyed that compared to the days when you walked into Blockbuster and all they had were 200 copies of Grumpy Old Men 4 (which were all checked out). My kids stream a fair amount of content (their selection of kids shows like Phineas and Ferb is fairly decent). We stream some TV series (Battlestar Galactica currently), but I do find their selection of movies for streaming is woeful (about to become even more woeful).

It started from Sept but you will not see it until the next billing cycle.... My cycle happened to fall on Sept 2nd :-/ so I had to drop stuff right away to avoid been billed.

The comments below the CEO's explanation are priceless...this company will be worth nothing in a few months..

I'm sticking with the streaming only. There aren't that many movies that I want to see. If one comes along that sounds really good, I'll get it from Red Box for $1.00. I will probably drop HBO, etc., too. I don't watch them that much either.

I find it amusing that the movie/entertainment industry's jealousy and refusal to get with the times has forced Netflix into making most of these decisions, yet it's Netflix that gets the customer backlash for it. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. With the increasing costs of licensing that Netflix is going to be suffering, it's amazing it isn't damn near $100 a month, and people quibble over an increase from $8 to $16 without really thinking about why.

True, the splitting of the company is a little mind-boggling, but for my part I'll continue to support Netflix and/or any company that tries their damnedest to give me content for a minimal price, instead of the rest of the entertainment industry's flat stubborness to keep trying to charge people $30 PER MOVIE and then bending over companies like Netflix when they try and usher in the future with greed and unreasonably gigantic licensing fees.

Netflix is as much a 'victim' here as any of you people think you are.
