How long does it take the average dialup voter to vote on 71 photos?
How about 125 photos? 400? You guys will need to change the requirement of voting on every photo if this site continues to grow at the rate it has in the past three weeks. Maybe every photo does not deserve a vote. You can pretty much tell by the thumbnail if the pic is deserving a more detailed look. We all enjoy the site but most of us don't have the time to spend two or more hours a week voting on each and every picture. Good luck.

That's the beauty of it... the site will reach an equilibrium when the number of photos you need to vote on is exactly high enough that it drives away any additional photographers. I assume that many people will start picking and choosing their competitions in the future as well, once the novelty wears off or because they don't have enough free time.

And I totally disagree about the thumbnail thing, I've been totally surprised by pictures after viewing them at full size. If you can call 640X480 full size!

I don't consider driving away photographers when it isn't necessary something beautiful.

But I agree with you that you can't judge a photo by its thumbnail.

And anyway, all photos deserve a vote, even if it's a 1.

I agree - and it's not just dial-up. The site is simply too slow to allow me to vote on 71 images. I have a T1 connection and it still would take me HOURS to vote on all the images, and as much as I enjoy viewing and commenting on others work, that kind of time I don't have.

Not to say I don't love the site! It must be something with this site and the path to my computer, because others are saying that they can vote on all the images in less than half an hour, and each full-size photo takes 60-120 seconds to load for me. But really, I love submitting my pictures as well as getting and giving feedback - keep up the great work!

I agree that voting (and especially commenting) on all of the images is time consuming, but I think it's a good requirement. After all, we're here to improve our photography. The voting / commenting process, if it's done conscientiously, benefits the commentor as well as the photographer. Take the time; it's worth it.

i voted at home on a cheap dsl connection and it took me about 15 minutes to vote on all the photos in the current challenge. at times, the site can be slow, but on average i've found it to be plenty fast.

the site can't cater to everyone who complains about every little thing. i think they're doing a great job so far, and as the site traffic becomes more regular and there is a history of usage, i'm sure they'll be able to make the site even more enjoyable for the masses.

This is a brand new site and they still have a lot of bugs to work out. The admins do a great job of listening to our requests and and they are implementing new features every day. I hope that something can be worked out to help people on slower connections. I used to have a dial up connection and a computer that was slow to begin with and it does get discouraging.

It usually takes me about 15-30 minutes to vote on a T1 line, not bad, especially since I'm usually at work at the time. :-)

But I like to go back and make comments on the photos I gave high marks too, so I will revisit the photos later in the week.

I agree with the rule that you must vote on every photo if you submit one. It takes a while, but you don't have to do it all at once. If I get a break from working and have nothing to do, I go and vote on a couple until they're all voted on. I also agree that an "equilibrium" will eventually form as mentioned in an earlier post, so the number of pictures to vote on won't be astronomically high. Every picture deserves a vote. Otherwise many great pictures could be completely overlooked. (cannot always tell by the thumbnail). Also, it is just fair to the photographer. imho

Thanks for all of your great comments.

As for the site being slow, this is a problem that should only exist for a few more weeks. If all goes as planned, it should be cleared up by the 25th.

Is it due to running ASP on Win2K IIS? :) I've noticed that page loads are nearly instantaneous at night (Pacific Time) but get much slower during the day. If people are able, they might want to try voting very early in the morning or late at night.
