Hello. I'm having a tough time finding a general photography contract that i can easily edit and is easy to understand. I found a great one for weddings. Should i just edit that and make it for portraits too? some links would help out a lot. Thanks in advance!

Since we're on the subject, will someone enlight me with knowledge regarding contracts?
How exactly would it work, once a client decides they want to work with you, you make them sign said contract.. both client and photographer keeping a copy of the contract?
Is it really that simple? Is this something that needs to be notarized?

Each of you keep a signed copy. No need for notarization. A signed contract can still be disputed for one reason or another (or no reason, given the right lawyer), but most people will acknowledge their responsibility to have read and understand it and comply. And most disputes can easily be worked out between reasonable parties without lawyers. Just make sure you only work for reasonable clients. ;-)

And when they sign that contract, get them to sign a check for your retainer. That check pays you to keep the stipulated date free. If they bail or need to change the date they bought, it's yours. If you complete the contract, it is a chunk of your profit. Letting them agree to a price without getting a bit of money up front, can make people think about where else they might get a better deal.

so now i have two contracts! one for well... almost everything. The other is strictly for weddings! :) It is really helpful to have contracts. especially if you dont want to get caught up in the arguement of "he said, she said". it makes sure everything is out there, so later there is little or no disputing. Last couple jobs, i didn't have a contract. I see the importance of them now :) anyways...

Can you guys take a look at my website too...? i know there is a thread specifically for that, but since i'm posting things here it would be nice :)

One thing you might want to do is have an attorney review your contracts. It might cost you $100-200, but it is worth it to make sure that everything is in order (ie, enforceable). Not all laws are the same from one state to another and sometimes generic contracts need to be tweaked in order to be completely enforceable in the state you are operating. (if this doesn't apply to you, just ignore)

----------------------

A handful of comments about your website:

1) Basic layout is nice.

2) About you: I am a self-taught photographer and I love it! I have always enjoyed different forms of art. P, but photography was the thing that stuck with me is what I enjoy the most. I am someone who cares about these pictures the images I capture as much as you do! I will do everything I can to make your shoot as relaxed and as comfortable as possible. I want to capture your personality and I want to make every image as perfect as possible. I strive for perfection with every shot in every photo shoot. I want the best to be given to for you and your family so that you can enjoy these pictures images for years to come. I also strive to capture your personality as well as possible and for you to enjoy your time and to be relaxed with me as well. I grew up near am from the Seattle area and love shooting anywhere in this beautiful place.

3) Avoid any language that detracts from you (ie, "It's been a while since I updated my site").

4) Watermark your images

5) The crop on the waterfront wedding is disconcerting

6) The image navigation takes too many clicks, especially having to reach up for the back button. You might want to look for a gallery plug-in.

7) I'm also not sure about uploading images that large. It's ok every now and then, but I wouldn't recommend it for every image.

8) Check your language for the use of "pictures". Anyone can "take a picture", but photographers "capture images". It's a matter of how you want to be perceived.

All in all, not a bad start.

So i didn't create the layout. and i have no choice but to upload them that big. Thats the 'template'. Its annoying and i wish i had more control over that. the website, even though its designed for me, is through wordpress.com I dont mind wordpress, but the layout is hard to learn.

I will edit the 'about me' page. Also if you didn't notice, there is a nav bar up above. there is a drop down menu for portfolio. it makes things easier. Everything on the front is supposed to be for 'blog' entries. Which i dont like to do.

The whole thing makes me irritated... ANYWAYS... before my whole day becomes an irritated mess... (not your fault skip)
