Yes, that 6.15 voting average shows that I've been dropping them all over the place. Actually, I like them so much that I keep most of them for myself.

Actually, you're one of the most thoughtful members/voters here. When I get a comment from you ... I pay attention. I have a tremendous respect for your body of photographic work. Thanks for being here and hanging in with the menagerie!

I still contend that the two are VERY different.

For illustration: the image above has a ton of starburst, and a little bit of flare. No way in hell I'd give that a high score in this challenge.

Wise beyond your years!

It could be a big mistake!!!

I'm along the same thinking that you are, Wendy. The starburst anyone can do and I'm sure there will be a zillion silhouettes with starbursts, but the flare part is the tough part and I understood that to be the "challenge" for this one. Who knows. I'm terrified!

Hi!
Is anyone willing to take a look at several pics?
Thanks!

No doubt, it's MUCH more difficult. Especially with better glass, as others have mentioned. I did the best I could with a Sigma 10-20 (I typically use the Canon) and el-cheapo Quantaray UV filter. I even tried the trick that was mentioned in the other thread about unscrewing the filter and trying to angle it in front of the lens slightly...no joy there. This was definitely tough...and staring at the sun gets old really fast. None the less, I actually enjoyed this challenge...it taught me more about lens flare than I was previously aware.

I wasn't as brave as you and took the middle ground with the image that I chose, it has a little bit of lens flare, but not a noticable amount like some of the beauties that I've seen on Flickr.

2 hours to go...I can't wait to see the other entries!

In our tourist town, I constantly see people with DSLRs and lenses without the lens hood in place. I didn't understand this, until today. And, most of these people forget about keeping the sun on the back of their shoulders. They have no fear of shooting directly into the sun, or at least they do not fear direct sun rays hitting the front element of their lenses. Now I know they are intentionally trying to generate lens flares in their images. Wow, it's a great creativity technique! I guess those multiple circles of color really do represent added elements of interest. I've been wrong to assume those flares were fatal flaws. Live and learn!

Some of them... I'd bet a good 2/3rds are just clueless..

I would be most disappointed in voters if entries in this challenge are DNMC'd just because there aren't 5 in line in your face aperture flares rather than just a "Star Burst". Note that flare doesn't have to be in your face and can be fairly invisible. Expensive lenses (primes, UWA's) have very special coatings to attempt to reduce or counteract the effects of flare and reflections.

IMO as long as the entry has any flare, in any form, in any quantity, subtle or in your face, it DMC.

Magnum,

I truly hope that other voters share your opinion on this as my "flare" consists of a rather larger starburst and only 2 little specks of traditional "flare." Unfortunately, I foresee many DNMC 1s and 2s in my future...though I suppose time will tell.

I never would have entered this challenge and hope my pitiful entry doesn't bring my avg down too much. :-(
The only way I would benefit from entering this challenge is if ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Lad has a worse flare than I do!

CJinCA you should be in total fear of both your own average score and for mine....
I quite like my entry but that always means it won't score very well...
Good luck ( sorry not good at trash talk)

Hey, you're better at it than I!
Maybe I should just pull my entry and forfeit - nah, I'm a glutton for punishment, besides, you might just be lying and have a really sucky entry! :-D

#4 here.

I'm up against Jagar. My only hope is that he can't beat his average of 11!
