I hope its the former coz all my entries currently in voting are about to raise my average quite nicely and i may not beat that easily with a lousy overexposed sun photo.

And no, i am not complaining about the high votes you guys are currently giving my three entries :)

It's your starting average that counts - it remains fixed for the duration of the challenge.

And as mentioned below, the next challenge announced will form the basis of round 2; you'll need to shoot for it because you won't know whether you are through until rollover next week.

Good luck all!

The next challenge which is yet to be announced?

Indeed!

It's going to be a wild card challenge...shoot and enter.

I'm ahead of my starting average, but only just :)

Good start! Just below my average this morning and now just above :)

Well, I have given a bye to my opponent - no sun all week, street lights that were too dim to produce flare :( I wasn't sufficiently keen to try and do anything with interior lights.

Same as you, Sara - we're on the tail end of Irene I believe. I did enter a botched up debatable though, running at 4.1

Okay Paul I'm doing much better then I expected, still don't think I will beat my average by much if at all. You should have me covered easily :)

Currently a little under my average so you may well win out.

DomD watch out. Im scoring about 0.8 above my average.
Looking at your profile it doesnt look like you entered a shot... but I'm not sure if we can still work it out that way after the site had some maintenance done on it?

Scoring just a teensy bit shy of my average at the moment, which is usually a good sign that this will not be a complete failure scorewise. MAK, you in?
09/05/2011 09:25:02 AM · #61
Well, as predicted my shot is below my avg. I'm sure this round will go to you Lad so how are you doing? At least now I can avoid challenges when I don't have a decent entry. :-/

Salmiakki is on to the next round. Congratulations, Sarah! Go shoot something wonderful for the next challenge, once we know what it is!

Perhaps a silly question, but couldn't find the rules thread.

Do you have to beat your average to advance, or do you just need to have a better score than the one you're competing against? Or, is it whoever beats their average better if both competitors have a result better than average?

Example: Person 1 has average of 5.5000 and scores a 5.6500, Person 2 has average of 5.600 and scores a 5.6600. Who advances? Person 1 beat their average by .15, Person 2 beat their average by .06. Person 2 had a higher score but lower "over average" result.

What happens if both competitors fail to hit their average?

Currently above my average, but not by much. I'm in a nosedive each time I hit the update button and down to a 5.4.

from paul's original thread:

In each match the person with the score that is highest relative to their starting average will go through. i.e. the person with the greatest positive (or lowest negative) difference between their score and their starting average will win.

bolding is mine

ETA: personally, i'd be mortified if i snuck into round two that way

I'm probably better off shooting something without knowing what the new challenge is! And it's not over until it's over Deb.

Given that's your average and assuming a normal distribution - there should be around a 50% chance of being above or below. Certainly no shame in being below - especially in low scoring or very challenging topics.

FourPointX is correct - highest positive or lowest negative difference goes through. i.e. whoever scores best relatively to their own starting average.

I'd be mortified if there wasn't a round two!
When is this new challenge going to get posted?

Thanks (to both of you) for the clarification.

I'm a full point below my average... and I thought it wasn't a bad shot... sigh... Early Congrats to Tommy_Mac I think we need a side challenge, who can fall the furthest from their average!!

Don't assure yourself. Mine is pretty darn low! :(

So, the challenge for Round 1 was 'Lens Flare' and for Round 2 is 'Sun in the Frame' - its a conspiracy to prevent the British from getting an entry in, I tell you!
