Just had a QUICK look through the entries and THINKING those who didn`t opt for a SQUARE crop with STRONG border really MISSED a trick - if anything points at a `style` for SHEZ it would be SQAURE crop and STRONG border.. To not do that is like SHOOTING in the STYLE of Ansel Adams and SUBMITTING in colour.

Also, we SHOULD write our REPLIES in this THREAD with randomly capitalised WORDS for the FULL Sherpet effect..

To be honest I was thinking more of Shez's approach and subject matter, and I overlooked the border and square crop. It's a mistake on my part. And yet it shouldn't be a reason for punishing people too hard with voting. I hadn't even thought of that when I was voting.

I've fallen quite a bit from my high of 6.3, but I got a lovely comment from Shez and some wonderful comments from others as well. I haven't been in the tiny violin range for ages, so...

Mine may/may not be square crop... but I will tell you the size requirements on DPC make it hard to have a square crop in COLOR with good sharpness...

not to be too OT, but why would the crop ratio make it hard to have good sharpness??

i've cropped square with no issues, for example

It's the number of pixels packed into the 300KB of space that can make it difficult. An 800x800 has 640,000 pixels to try to compress into the allotted space, while 800x533 (my camera's default ratio) only has 426,400 pixels.

In your examples, there aren't a lot of fine details, which is normally what is hard for JPEG compression to compress. You have a lot of big blocks of the same/similar colors which is easy to compress and thus you can get away with good detail/sharpness in those images.

Hope that makes sense.

I disagree

That image is only 640x640 pixels, which means it only has 409,600 pixels. Plus, it has a LOT of area that is blobs of similar color, which again are easy for JPEG compression to deal with. So that proves my statement nicely as well :)

BTW, Mark said it was hard, not impossible :)

I am so glad you reminded everyone about the square crop and border usage being Sherpets style...so now all the non square/border entries can be voted accordingly....! That will help my score!!!!
