I get 5's all the time. Maybe it is time to let the message pass in my head and understand what the voters are trying to tell me: sell my stuff and look out for another hobby. Maybe I can start knitting :D

ah, Nadine, i assume you are saying that jokingly. I have seen a recent "harsh" voting trend here, too, as of late. i'd suggest if you are getting a lot of low scores, get a "second opinion" so to speak on your body of work. try another digital photography contest site, or a local "physical" photo contest.

i recently entered 8 of my photos at a local county fair*, 7 of which i had also entered into DPC. 5 of them got a ribbon (1 1st place, 2 4th place, 2 5th place). here's a breakdown of the fair ribbon vs. DPC score:

....Fair Ribbon..........DPC Score
....1st place...............5.76
....4th place...............6.26
....5th place...............5.52 & 6.65 (3rd place finish)

obviously, what DPC finds exceptional and what other folks find pleasing differ. i'd say there is a "style" that DPC represents, and even if your photo is outstanding it won't necessarily score well here. my personal experience is sometimes i nail it, and sometimes i don't. and it does hurt when you put a lot of effort into a shot only to get a sub-5 score (where i'm at now!).

just keep shooting and have fun! (note: i'm saying that to myself even more than to you all)

peace,
-mefnj

*i should have noted that the county fair categories were pretty broad, like "color landscape", "color wild animal", or "black and white still life", etc.

I have to agree that the scores of late, for me anyway, are a gauge of DPC mass appeal only. There are some amazing photographers here and often they don't score well in challenges, but they garner accolades. Many can't get accepted to 1x...but then the stuff on 1x may not be everyone's cup of tea either, so why is this the new "gold standard"? It becomes a personal test for many, IMHO, just to see if they can make it. Like ribbons here..if it eludes you and you desire it, you strive for it...but through a channel of very good, average, not so good and clueless photographers voting on THEIR impression of your image. Because there is so much subjectivity on this site, you have to figure out a way to make it personal to you and work with that.

Did I think outside the box? Did it get a low score, but a different award?
Do I enter side challenges and get much more objective and useful comments and suggestions?
Did I enter a shot that looks like every other shot of the same subject? (Water drops, wine glasses, etc.)d did it do well? This only matters if you are trying to master that particular result, but know there is definitely learning involved for these.

Once we start shooting for ourselves and don't worry so much about the scores, we enjoy our photograph more and will learn along the way. My 2ยข.

As for knitting...I'm still trying to learn how to photograph...why would I subject myself to wearing a glove with an extra finger or a scarf that is crooked??? :P

I haven't quite mastered the not caring part yet. But I care less than I used... though I think that's cause I have been going through a relatively good patch for the last 15 challenges or so. No doubt a dirty 4 would hurt :-)

I know you're kidding, but, underneath it I'm sure there's also a grain of truth there. I often used to feel the same way. The thing is, I've gotten past the need to worry about the scores. I think it was vawendy or possibly LydiaToo who had the best suggestion I've heard so far for dealing with the "voting style" of DPC.

Make it a contest with yourself. Try to beat your last entry or your overall average.

It's great advice. That and I stopped hitting the update button every 5 seconds and keeping track of all the 1s I get. What are most helpful to me are the overall score, and comments.

Good advice- I've tried to beat my own average with each entry for years. When I started doing that, my average was somewhere in the high 5 range and every success raised the bar a little bit. If you take that contest seriously, you will force yourself to improve.

I have been a member since Nov. 2010. Over the past 9 month I have received varying degrees of rating, but mostly in the 5 something range.I have received commends, some of which were praise, some were critiques and some were just plain hurtful. The latter I find in particular not so good because they are made at times by people who's work I admired beforehand, but no longer do, because their work really does not reflect who they are. I had periods of time where I plainly did not want to even photograph simply because I did not want to be put down by a "great"(some 1x) one again.
Having said all this, to me photography is an outlet for self expression. I photograph because I love doing so. If others appreciate what I do, GREAT. If they don't who cares. It is something I must do because it gives me joy and peace. Therefor I conclude, that the acceptance of others , especially in a small group like DP is not what we should measure our love for photography on! ....and those were my 2 cents

I think that's an 'easy' way of looking at it :-)
I try to beat my yearly average. I figure I improve as time goes on, so I may as well attempt to match my improvements.
Overall average is nearly 5.5 (and will be come the next rollover!), but my 2011 average is 5.7307. Which is roughly 0.23 times harder to do assuming a linear relationship :-)

Of course I'm kidding Kelli. Although, I already knit ;)
And of course you are completely right on your approach of the matter.
I for myself shoot what I like as well. And I try to improve myself. I try to steal with my eyes here, learn from the other photographers. I even learn of their process way and it gives me the little push to try out new things, new processing ways. As stated in my profile: I'm a Photoshop nitwit and don't process a lot. But I'm willing to learn and in this learning curve I'll hit the ball often wrong. Until I found how it really should be done and I can say that, once more, I've taken a little step forward.
I'll never be an IreneM, I'll never be a KarenNfld, or any other fine photographer here on DPC, not for a very long time anyway.
But, who doesn't try can not succeed.

As for now,I don't hunt ribbons, I don't hunt a top 10 place - not even a top 20. I got only 1 simple goal: have a change in my list of Highest Rated Photographs.

And, while writing this, a small look on how my C-entry is doing gives me a good feeling :) as at this very own moment, it's a bit of a PB.

Don't worry, I won't turn in my camera for some extra knitting needles :D - it is not the time yet to go and knit socks for the whole family.

yeah, that IS my goal, but it is hard to do when people are voting you down, down, down even for a relatively "good" photo.

First and last time for everything, right? I've got a perfectly good picture, and go and ruin it by editing it on my laptop, minutes before rollover. Sigh.
