This is only for fun, please don't take this seriously or cancel your shot because of this. :)
Wood, living and dead. Rocks. Toiletpaper. :)

I think these threads discourage new and novice photographers...

I've been trying to take an interesting picture of tree bark all my life. :( . I came home today to discover the apartment managers have cut down the redbud that was shading my door! boo hoo. If I still had a camera I would shoot the tree rings. and then colorize it. * sigh*

Just ignore this post if you think your photo is clichéd. I knew that my spider photo would be in that category. :)

Some of us would see this as a challenge. Take a photo one would think was cliche'd... and actually make it original.

Thats my plan, at least. We'll see if I end up being able to pull it off or not ;)

I am quite new to the site, I would say a newbie (and a new photographer I guess since I still mesure time taking photos in months) and I already have figured out that if it is not clichéd then it is to ''risky'' and no one will get it.
.

Just have to take your picture anyway. =)

"From the mouth of babes". Dude, if only you knew how right you were :-/

I have a photo in the challenge right now and I have recieved more than one comment that says "I don't get it".

It's art, not the 'Roseanne' show..you might not ever get it. As a matter of fact..I don't "get" everything about my own photos. Thats what makes it fun.

What a boring life it would be if we "got" everything :-)

I took a picture of brown paper towels yesterday -- the kind you find in public bathrooms a lot. My husband thought it was human skin. Hhhmmmmmm. Wouldn't recommend it. The colors are boring, and the texture is hard to distinguish. :-)
Now, if you have "Bounty quilted" paper towels, it might be a different story. :-)

This challenge may require some 'oustide the box' thinking... When i first thought about photographing textures, I was concerned that I would produce an image of some textured surface that took up the entire frame. This would end up looking like a windows wallpaper or something like that... how could we incorporate something artistic into the challenge and not produce a bunch of flat images?

what do you mean ... ??? ;)

I've been thinking about just that...the outside of a box ;) lol. Seriously, I keep coming back to still life arrangements, edges and such. Mostly I wish I had a very cooperative baby's butt and toes as the newborn lay curled up. Heck I don't even have any patient old wrinkly folks who'll let me play with lighting for an hour! PLEASE don't feel this comment eliminates the ideas. I'd love to see them rendered and would take it as a compliment.

I think if you are happy with a photo and YOU think it is applicable to the challenge - THEN SUBMIT IT ...
All this website is - is based on others people's opinions ... if you are confidant in the photo and proud of that image - then share it .. and see if other people agree .. it may be cliche or it may be totally abstract .. who cares ... that's your photo and you took the time to create it ... be proud of what you shoot and dont get all bent out of shape if someone doesnt agree with it (that's what I'm learning) -
This is all for fun - and Yes it's nice when people like your work ... that always brightens my day - but if they dont - well .. oh well .. hopefully the next comment will be better ... There are alot of people who view and vote and comment on our photos - so shoot what you think is the best you've done and post it ... The rest is just gravy!

you're so right. i agree with you wholeheartedly! when you publish your work there'll be some for you, some against no matter what. that goes with the territory in all artistic endeavors. i'm learning you have to develop thicker skin and be confident that your interpretation is right for you. sometimes gravy is lumpy! ;-)

I thought gravy was supposed to have lumps--gives you perspective.
07/16/2002 01:47:03 PM · #17
Hmmm, lumpy gravy. That would fit into the texture challenge.

Cliché or not, the power of the photo will rule..........

i'm proudly posting a cliche that is a reshoot of a photo i've seen in a photography book - can't rememeber what it was, i was in the library going through books and noticed that photo and decided its worth it. :-)

Ya'll might want to consider that the best way to see one texture is by seeing two. Side light and contrast are the key.

Hay guess what!. I've gone into debt for an Olympus c-3020.

See ya. aelith

I bet you can find a nearby nursing home or senior center where they''d love to have you come by and chat with (and photograph) a bunch of the residents -- just tell them you have an assignment to photograph some older folks...they probably won''t even ask for your passport...I''d offer even odds that if you spend two hours there you, will have not only a suitable photo for DPC, but enough material to write a freelance newspaper article...
