sorry a little OT...I was trying to find out more about the DPC Prints thingy, but i came up not knowing how to even do it... do we check images we'd like to be considered for the Print site, they get reviewed by SC and either accepted or rejected?

feel free to point me to a link

thanks,

Go to "My Portfolio" and find the photo you want at DPC Prints. Click on it and it brings up an info screen similar to the one you fill out when submitting to challenges. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where you can upload a high resolution file that will be reviewed for acceptance at DPC Prints.

Woke up this morning to a 5.5000 with about 25 votes. Managed to climb back up to 5.92xx at 56 votes with 3 good comments. While typing this post, voter #57 gave me a 1 and dropped my score to 5.84xx. Bummer :(

The sad news is that a 6.0 this early in the week generally means it will be in the 5's well before turnover.

Is turnabout fair play? We've lifted a couple of challenge ideas from Gizmodo right after they did them, and I just saw this on Gizmodo today.

Wish we had this challenge description, then maybe people would see past the genre

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shooting Challenge: Film Noir
Forget the cheesy fedoras and femme fatales for a moment. Film noir was, at its heart, about light and shadow, hope and despair, good and evil...and the difficulty of distinguishing everything in between. For this week's Shooting Challenge, rediscover noir.
The Challenge
Capture a photo in the film noir style. That means black and white with low-key lighting. Does it mean detectives and dames? Not necessarily. Go for the feeling and the tone, first and foremost.
The Technique
If film noir is known for anything, it's low-key lighting. All this term means is, rather than evenly light a scene with a number of bulbs, one light fires from one angle only. This creates deep shadows where traditional wisdom would advise you fill the dark pools with another light.
Of course, you don't need to light your scene with a single light in a literal sense. Just go for strong whites and deep blacks - high contrast.
Well, the original Noir Film was about using lighting to create a mood about a dark subject(fear, killing, etc.)
I understand the idea of "wishing it was like x" for the challenge description. But the fact remains that the challenge description IS:
Challenge: Film Noir
Type: Open Challenge
Rules: Advanced Editing
Voting Deadline: Tuesday, August 16th, 2011
Description: "Film Noir" is a genre of film between 1940 and 1960, originating in the United States, employing heavy shadows and patterns of darkness, in which the protagonist dies, meets defeat, or achieves meaningless victory in the end. Take a photo using the style of film noir.
Edited to add this:
Understanding the Description line leaves a lot to the photogrpaher with "in the style of" I wish all of us with our various interpretations of the description good luck!
Really upset...hung around the high 6's and 7's till 11 votes and then plummeted and am now on 5.4 with 4 comments, two of which claim my image is the winner. Pity help any swayed voting out there cause if I get hold of the culprits it will be a blood game!!!
Shame that some voters pinpoint themselves to the actual "crime and mobster scenes"
I love film noir (did not enter) for the low-key, the specific light etc and distributed my votes accordingly.
Some photographs are really capturing the mood, others can hardly be called film noir.
Stats: You have rated 106 of 106 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 9 images (8%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.1792.
I hope I'll find the time to add some more comments.
My only thought here is that it would be nice if everyone would give the others the benefit of the doubt.
Each of us read the description, and interpreted the Challenge in his/her own way. I doubt that ANYONE
actually read the challenge and said, "oh, I'll just stick this in there, anyhow."
but, dang it, I was hoping for the brown, and here I am with loads of company.
:)
And I really like my effort on this challenge submission, which is way out of my comfort zone. It's too bad the image is receiving such a harsh reception. This may discourage me from trying new techniques and subjects in the future. My wife really likes the image, too. She thought I nailed the challenge. (Evidently not.)
I have yet to reach & maintain a 5 and got two comments which point out why (grin. However, it is one of my fav shots for a lot of reasons that I can't go into here as it would give away which is mine. I haven't voted yet but when I do it will be high votes, not just on the technically perfect shots - but the ones that tell me a story and suit the challenge as I understand it to be.
Some great ones here. Kudos to those folks. Is it just me, or were so many of them way too well lit, without enough shadow play to really be noir?
08/10/2011 09:03:56 PM · #73
I guess the darkness of the images could be indicative of different scenes of the different movies, which are darker and lighter depending on the parts of the movie. Some parts are quite well lit, others are dark, sinister, and pretty emotive when captured in a single frame several very dark images in this challenge that have strong stories emerging from a single photo, some brilliant entries. I guess we most remember the dark scenes due to what is usually happening at that time in these films.
