Dropped from 7.2 at 18 votes to 6.47 at 36 votes.

Still a happy vote -- but wow, what a drop!

Considering my image clearly meets the challenge and is pretty good, this score is a big disappointment. Some people are playing games.

Well it appears you are the only one doing any good in this thread. I have dropped over a point in very few votes.

Are the voters taking the challenge description too literally with regards to the 1. protagonist dies, 2. meets defeat, or 3. achieves meaningless victory in the end? A good shot should still be a good shot and get a good score.
Just feels like the (harsh) (trolls) voters are always out to find a problem with every image in every challenge.
Not a good sign with the WPL about to get under way...

I'd have to agree, I feel my picture perfectly portrays one of the 3 points yet score is drastically dropping! Some people have no decency to rate according to the shot, they just want to get ahead of eveyone.

I agree that people are taking the description too literally. In this case, I thought the description was simply explaining the style. Just because it explains that noir films "1. protagonist dies, 2. meets defeat, or 3. achieves meaningless victory in the end", doesn't mean you have to have a noir subject to do the style of noir. To me it's about the feeling, lighting, etc.

I also think that it's not necessarily people playing games, but people either not understanding or not liking the film noir style. When I asked for some feedback prior to the challenge, some friends and family absolutely loved my shot. Others didn't like it at all.

I expect that there's going to be a lot of that in this challenge. Not that people are messing with the votes.

"You have given an average score of 7.1250."
That's the highest average I have ever given. I am surprised the reported scores are not much higher.

Well, I am going to throw a party for the lowest score I have ever received since joining DP in May 2006. I knew it would bomb .. but not this bad lol - have to say though that it was a very fun shoot to do. When I went to bed it was 5.4xx, here it is this morning;

i'm not sure if voters know/appreciate the challenge as it seems they don't like all the picture... I remember I asked my wife and my cousin for their opinion and their reaction are bad. i believe its not a bad picture its only a wrong audience..

Last night it was at 5.5 with 21 votes, which is about what I expected for a last minute entry. But after seeing the other entries, I think this deserves to be in the 4 range. There are some beautifully lit and very dramatic images.

You have rated 105 of 105 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 12 images (11%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.9429.

Trying to comment on as many as I can.

There are really a lot of high quality photos in this one.

It was as high as 6.4 when I went to bed last night. Maybe early troll voters? Some really good entries in this challenge.

I'm with Wendy. I never took the challenge description for this one to mean you needed to have a person dead, defeated, or with a meaningless victory (although those would be applicable subjects). If you read the description excluding these plot descriptions, it explains what the style is

"Film Noir" is a genre of film between 1940 and 1960, originating in the United States, employing heavy shadows and patterns of darkness, [snip plot]. Take a photo using the style of film noir.

For once, a description that was clear enough for me not to miss ;-)

p.s. i'm in mid 6's right now, and comments indicate i nailed it pretty well

Squirrels were not in a photographic mood for this one?
I guess Film Noir is not a very squirrelly topic!

Drat!! I never thought of a squirrel for this one!

A squirrel in a fedora and trench coat, smoking a cigarette -- now that would have been a good shot! :D

But who would be the protagonist?... the squirrel, or the squirrel hunter?
08/10/2011 11:19:43 AM · #49
The protagonist is a NUT.

I'm definitely didn't read this as a "must have a dead or defeated protagonist" interpretation on this, but a lot of shots don't seem to have a "noir-esque" feel.

Despite being a blockhead about the lego challenge, I'm really all about a looser interpretation of challenges. Makes for more interesting shots, IMO. Haven't voted on this challenge yet, though.
