I was looking through a tutorial today found here, that uses something called ghee (a mixture of kneaded eraser and modeling clay) to hold up their jewelry for the shot. I was wondering if anyone heard of this or uses it themselfs. I am curios as how to get my rings to stand up straight for the shots. I tried using sticky tack but I think it is getting soft because of the lights and starts to not hold the ring. Also, I have to use too much of it since it is not very strong and can see it in the shots. What do you guys use/do?
Thanks,
Ryan |

While you can get 'blu-tak' and 'white-tak', you can also get 'black-tak' which is also nicknamed elephant snot. This is like blu-tak but its inductrial strength, and gets stickier when it's warm. Try using that. It's what the photographer used when I was on a work experience placement, and it's reeeeaaaly sticky.

The word ghee is also hindi for clarified butter so be careful if you're trying to order that mixture of eraser and modelling clay!

I've always understood ghee to be a combination of clarified butter and marijuana. Whatever art store is selling it just might be a front. :)

Why not just use locking tweezers or the presentation boxes that rings are normally sold in? Your subject will be held securely upright, and you'll have a much better looking background than some blob of sticky clay. |

Ch-ching! Besides, in the US, it would probably do a fine business ... |

Ha haaaaaaaaa!
Shame ghee is pronounced "gee" rather thahn "jee" really!
Sadly I've not eaten a curry that had marijuana ghee in it - I'm sure I'd have noticed...

I remembered after posting that ghee and marijuana is called puna butter around here. Once prepared it can be used in just about any dish that requires butter. From what I hear if you go to some of the right old hippie run family restaurants around here and are in "the know" you can order any dish "special".

We deviated way off topic here folks! I am glad my post could bring enjoyment to everyone though. Thanks for the replys. Where can I get that black-tac? I only need very small pieces to get the ring to hold up so I am hoping I won't be able to see it. The pictures need a pure white background or I might think about other stuff. I have put a slit in a index card and that holds it up pretty good.
Thanks,
Ryan

Rubber cement might work. Besides being cheap and easily available it comes off clean from a lot of different types of surfaces, especially smooth hard ones. |

Radio Shaq and others sell a device called "extra hands" which consists of a heavy base, a pair of adjustable arms, and a pair of aligator clips at the end of each arm. Electronics folks use these to hold wires and parts together for soldering. Perhaps you could snip a tiny hole in card, attach the ring to one clip, and hold the card with the other clip, creating a fake "floor" for the image.
You'd need to do a bit of pshop work to remove the tips of the aligator clips, but not too much I'd think. |
