*shrug*

Who knows, probably because there was something written that may be regretted later..

Not exactly a great thing to do in my opinion, as it really does sorta mess up the thread, but it's his right to remove them, so let's just try not to worry about it too much.

Hey Lisa,

Simply posting a link to this photo would have quelled a lot of the banter which arose here. The old adage is actions speak louder than words, and that photo is a good capture of an extremely rare event.

You know, Lisa, I am curious - how exactly do you get an owl to turn it's head upside down at you? :) I think I need to learn that trick from you.

The bird was obviously reading this thread. My head is spinning also. ;)

I see we have new members.
Welcome to our pool!
Earlier today, I had a very nice reply all typed up and ready to post, when the power went off here.
Anyway, I'm happy to see that this thread didn't turn into some kind of rant, and that you will be sticking around. Thanks for being patient with the "gate keepers".
BTW, that's a stunning photo of the owl, and congrats on the first place with it.

AllenP: Thank you! I really did just get lucky.

OK...now that CNovack has talked some sense back into me...and someone mentioned "chocolate"...I will join and see what awesome photogs are on this site!

I apologize to all those whose "feathers" I ruffled.

Lisa, welcome aboard! It's good that folks on both sides of the divide seem to have seen the light. We look forward to more killer bird photos. Be sure to hook up with vawendy, our reigning queen-of-the-birds. I've managed a couple quirky bird ribbons myself, but nothing on that scale:

Thanks for all the welcomes! I am hoping to become an active member..after I learn how to navigate the site.

Venser: posting the link would have gotten me accused of "self promoting" and you see how much "trouble" I started with my initial post...lordy...I would have really gotten raked over the coals! LOL!

Cory: I just asked her nicely to pose pretty for me and she flipped her head upside down!

Again: Thanks and I am looking forward to participating in DPC!

Welcome!! Your owl shot is incredible! Beautifully done. :)

Here's something you might find helpful:

The thread is quite old, but most of the information is still quite useful.

Vawendy: Thanks! I def want to know the rules so I don't get into any more "trouble"..LOL!...but, I can't promise I won't :)

I heard you are a "bird" lady too! Awesome! I love wildlife in general, but I have to say that birds of prey are my favorite subjects. We have a wonderful bird sanctuary near me & it's my fav place to shoot. In the winter we have Bald Eagles just over in Alton IL. Not many eagles this past winter as it was too warm.

I will be going on vacation next week, but after that I will try to be an active member!

I ended up doing bird photography kind of by accident -- I had bluebirds visiting my yard, and so I set out to get them to nest here so I could photograph a bluebird feeding its baby. Well... things kind of exploded from there! My favorite place to go is about 3.5 hours from here -- Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. It's such an incredible place, and it's on a migration path, so the birds change throughout the year. I only get there a couple of times a year, so I have to stick with the birds around my area for the most part.

Some day I'm afraid that my family will wake up and find that I've moved to Chincoteague and that I'm living there in a yurt. :)

If you're ever in Virginia, let me know and I'll take you out there. You'd have a blast!

I'm looking forward to February. I discovered that there's a great blue heron rookery about an hour from here, in the middle of a city.

Pipeline Rookery

They start nesting around February and then there's the shad run sometime in April where they're all sitting in the river catching huge fish.

That's the bird excitement around here. :)

I look forward to seeing your work! Welcome again. :)

@lisalkee First off welcome to the site lisalkee!

Why do I get the feeling that you became a paid member?

For the record a large portion of this site is available without paying a dime. When people were urging you to join they meant for you to enter competitions, they weren't asking you to pay money to verify your legitimacy.

That said, the paid membership is more than worth it. In fact if you sell any photographs on //www.dpcprints.com (available to paid members) it can easily pay for itself. And based on your owl shot that shouldn't be much of a challenge.

@thread "I Shot It" is not technically a pyramid scheme - a pyramid would involve you earning more for every person you get to join also. For example winning gets you $1000 AND an extra $5 for every person that joins using your referral code. (EDIT (clarification) : sorry, I meant the prize only goes up for YOU if you refer people. Not for everyone, which it does)

Unless you meant pyramid as an allegory... the pharaoh gets 50%, and all the slaves pay $10 to join and help build the pharaoh's prize. ;)

Glad to see that you will be joining us Lisa:-) Not only are there the challenges in voting but occasionally their are the Side Challenges and Tournaments. You don't get a score but you can participate in a themed month where all participants give feedback on posted images. It is also a great way to try new techniques or other types of photography .

You talk to the birds!?

In Ft. Wayne, IN we have the Little Rivers Wetland Project, and I work just up on the bench from their Eagle Marsh wetlands. This year hasn't been good for birds (IMO) because of the heat - lots of the wetland ponds have dried up, reducing the fish, etc. You might want to check out their web site at www.lrwp.org for a list of species that have been spotted here. Ft. Wayne is in the NE corner of the state, about 15 miles from OH, and 45 miles from MI. That'd be a little hike from SW IL, but doable for a weekend getaway.

I shoot just about anything, but really like nature. Birds are really frustrating for me because they are so skittish - hard to get up close to them - even with a good zoom.

dtremain: YES...I talk to birds...and they listen! LOL!

I am actually in Missouri. I agree, it's been bad for birds with this hot weather. This winter we did not get the bald eagles like in 2011 in Alton IL...there were some at a couple wildlife refuges I go to, but not many. Thanks, I will check out the site. My hubs & I have a trip planned for next spring to come up through Indiana and go to Ohio.

Would love to see some of your work get added to your DPC portfolio.

I prefer 765 on the long side. But it all comes down to personal preference.

Thanks Cory & Jovan! I'll see if I can find time to add a few pics tonight.
