I wanted to do this for a long time and John asked to do some night time photography on Friday, I used that as an excuse to play a little more than usual. I went out last night with my son's and a friend to try it out

DANGER:Fire Hazard is real when burning metal is flying 50 feet in all directions (as my car windshield wiper got destroyed!!!)

So I invited a friend but did not tell him what we were going to do. I only asked that he bring a 9 volt battery and his tripod. I did not want him to know what was about to go on as it is a little hard to explain this.

My tools were a simple whisk to put the steel wool in and I used found the first good use for that Crap Canon 7D camera strap! I never thought I was going to find any use for such a piece of S**t. If you have a Canon Camera strap on your camera, I feel very sorry for you... Sorry, back to Steel Wool

Here is the Video of of my friend (NOT KNOWING WHAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN) as I explain what direction his camera should be in. F-7 to F-11 is good and low ISO and a nice long shutter, Bulb mode is almost a must.

Here are some of my results

Overhead (laugh was watching one of the pieces bounce off my son and seeing the look on his face!) I got hit a bunch of times by small pieces and it does not bother you when you get hit...Now if it sticks your screwed!

I have been meaning to give this a try for a while... good plan near the water as when your friends ass burns to the ground you could have put him out :-)

Great fun images.....

These are awesome and dare I say...inspirational?

now where's that steel wool?
08/05/2011 07:02:15 AM · #4
Hang on - you put the steel wool in the whisk. You've got a 9v battery.. and... then what?

i.e. how do you ignite the steel wool?
08/05/2011 07:06:39 AM · #5
touch the battery terminals to the steel wool, the short out arc spark lights the wool.

how long does it burn for?

Those shots are great! I tried this for a recent challenge, can't believe you did it in shorts and t-shirt. I burnt my hair and set a tree on fire doing it. We had to quickly get the hose out before it got out of control. Good fun though.

I'd like to try it again in more interesting surroundings like this one (a nod to ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_N.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_N.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Chandi for the link)....

I agree... These are great shots, which are ... well... diminished, by the choice of clothing your model wore.

UV filter is a good idea if you are going to be shooting close to the action. Those little spark blobs will burn themselves right into the front element of a lens if they hit it. I have ruined several pairs of Ray Bans by forgetting to remove them from my shirt pocket while welding and cutting metal. If you try to pick the little boogers off the glass they take a little chip of glass out with them.

when you are spinning the strap that tightly, you are subject to a nasty blister on your finger, where the strap is rubbing. I had no problems until my last swing the other night when the cord got the best of me. One good swing is all it took.

No biggie but fun to look at! ;) You should have seen the look on my son's face when he had seen this on the way home...wanted to know why I was not crying. I told him I was....ON THE INSIDE and cracked a really big smile. What a great night!

That's what you get for insulting The Strap.

It only showed me that the real Canon strap looks cool but really is good for nothing!

Some pretty cool shots there - and developing nicely as you go along !!

really nice job! Great photos!

i must say though i started to feel a little sick reading about the blister...
12/23/2011 05:42:23 PM · #23
thanks, and the blister was from the rubber part of the strap rubbing against my hand. Fix is simple....wear a glove, not one since! ;)

Very cool, thanks for sharing :)
