is it my monitor, some splendid looking photos, but extremely grainy

It's not your monitor there are some really grainy images. Some actually look very good with the grain. I am glad we are not hit with clean sterile images this time. :)

My entry is one where the chocolate looks a little grainy. I had a couple comments suggesting that melting the chocolate a bit gives it a smoother appearance which is a really great idea. Wish I'd thought of that before! A couple others mentioned the grainy look but said that's just how chocolate is sometimes and they aren't deducting for it. Honestly I thought my photo would do worse than it is because of it (I have not invested in NeatImage) but I seem to be holding on to a respectable score so far.

If you don't see it on your home page then go to your preferences. There's a check box to select if you want this information on the home page.

There are a lot of noisy pictures too. I know noise tends to be amplified with a faster ISO. Grain can be a nice affect, but noise is annoying.

Mine has a bit of grain, and people have commented on it, but being on a Mac, I can't use Neatimage. Oh well!

For non-challenge images, one way to make the noise more like film grain is to duplicate the background, apply gaussian blur to this duplicate and use the blending mode 'color'.

hey boomer, have you looked into Noise Ninja? It's latest release is for macs. I've used it with pretty good success.

"Clean sterile images" tend to do well in challenge voting. :(

Just get the free version of neatimage .. thats what I do. Anyway, I agree. I saw soo many grainy images, and for every grainy image there was at least another out of focus one. There were several great shots that stood out.

Is there a free version? I admittedly didn't look too hard, but I did a quick search on it and only saw version that you had to pay for.

I'm getting a new computer in the next couple weeks so I'm waiting on that too. I'd rather just install it once (especially when I thought I was paying to do so.)

cpanaoiti, you cannot use any blend modes for basic challenges. You probably knew this. I wouldn't want any new people to get confused.
From the basic rules:
Layers: Only adjustment layers may be used, and the layer must be applied in normal mode. All other types of layers and all other blending methods (modes) are prohibited. Layers may not be used to apply a prohibited effect to an image.

Note that the free version of NeatImage is intended to be a "demo" and entice you to buy the product; it only saves very highly compressed JPEGs which can show signs of compresison artifacts quite easily. The full version has more control over the output options, and you can also get a version that works as a plug-in from within Photoshop, to avoid the whole "intermediate file save" step.

thought i would bring this up again, cant believe how many blurred,
grainy photos there are in the choc challenge, is it mostly because
of macro? i had a problem once with the zoom being max from a previous photo and used it for macro and the results were the same?
