i understand every point of view on the subject of "ribbon heavy team(s)", and i think both (all) sides have valid points so i won't rehash them.

however i will point out that if the team competition is in the interest of all for a learning experience, wouldn't it seem a beter learning experience for everyone if the teams were evenly balanced with newbies and accomplished photographers? i think jen has an excellent point saying "it's a great opportunity to learn from some of the most successful" but wouldn't that be REALLY fair/helpful for a team split with different levels of accomplishment? a team of newbies will learn from each other certainly, but wouldn't they have a better learning experience with a few vets?

having said this, I still will enjoy the heck out of the competition regardless of how the teams are distributed.

Just because I've won a lot of ribbons doesn't mean I know everything or have nothing left to learn. I don't know much about photoshop (I usually only do basic editing). I don't own or know how to use a light meter. I don't own or know how to use an off camera flash (I do have studio lights but it's mostly trial and error when I use those). I'm looking forward to getting some hints and tip from my team-mates and improving.

which falls in line with what sheryll said, which is something i hadn't considered, and i agree with you 100%.

Ouch! As a member of your team, it is good to know how you feel, Scott. LOL

WPL is becoming for me a similar story as the Heida's mentoring scheme. It failed me in a big way before it even started. In some ways this might be for the best.

I figured since I'm just meeting all of you for the first time we should get started on the right foot. :D

You interested in joining the "Village Burners"?
08/04/2011 01:31:19 PM · #259
Most of the Village Burners are busy with weapons building, getting tattoos, lifting weights and scouting villages to compete in WPL, however a couple of us would like to use this event as a recruiting tool.

So far the team consist of:

sempermarine
smardaz
dtallakson
silent-shooter

Looking to fill the remaining slots. If you think you have what it takes to be a "Village Burner" here is your chance. Send me a PM and I will forward you the application.

When does the "smack talk" thread happen? I am starting to get itchy fingers here...

08/04/2011 01:44:00 PM · #263
Well, I have this to say. I joined for one reason only - learn more & to have fun.

When I look at the 'ribbon hogs', I see a group of people who have entered a lot of regular challenges, side challenges and have contributed to making this site better by commenting, creating tutorials or acknowledging photographers they don't even know (Karen NFL) and spend a lot of time doing it.

In other words, they worked hard to gain the skills they have, have been around for a long time (in most cases) and I totally understand why they would want to form a team.

I don't work half as hard and only entered 60+ challenges and I have been a member for years.

As for being fair, my opinion and mine only, is that any suggestion they should bring in less experienced people to even the playing field is akin to telling them, you can't form a team where you can play and have fun - you have to teach.

Besides, ribbons bah, we are going to beat them and their shame will be all the greater for being beat by the non ribbon hogs (grin)

edited to make my point more clear:

I put 'ribbon hogs' in quotations as the term was used long before my post and is often used in a joking way to tease .. frankly I don't care how many ribbons people have or don't have .. they earned them which was the point of my post. :) So please don't take offense to the term as my intent was not to offend but this type of communication is very inadequate.

It's probably better to have little/no respect for someone's work and gain some than the opposite.
I think we should call our team something like "Respectalot"

"ribbon hog"?! This is great. Off to admire my profile page now.

Added: Nuts, the 4's and low 5's are still there...

If you are signed up and have not be picked be proactive.
1. Think of a team name.
2. Contact others on the list
3. Start a team even if it's not complete.
4. Try to compete your team before all 16 slots are taken.

Hope that helps for the ones waiting to be picked. You have just as much right to start a team as anyone else.

I will be doing updated this afternoon. If you notice when filling out a form it gives me a date and time stamp. I go by that to see who what teams complete first.

Thanks everyone for putting up with me being slow to post and update. It's a little work so it takes some time.

I want to thank everyone for taking the ball and rolling with it. You guys/gals are great.

Would like to start a team, but it's not so easy to figure out who is already in a team and who is not.
