Wondering if someone could help me out. After reading various reviews of the Nikon 50mm lens and that it was a 'must have' lens for your bag i figured I'd check them out on eBay and see what sort of prices i could pick on up for.

Problem now is that I'm more confused than i was before and how many different versions of this lens there are. Some will auto focus, some wont. Some will meter correctly, some wont etc...

Some of the lenses i have been watching over the past couple of weeks -

Ideally i would like it to meter and auto focus on my D40x but if i have to manually focus that would not be a problem.

Many thanks.

I know that D40's have limited compatibly with some of the lens for Nikon...be sure yours will "get along" with each other

Get the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G, much more usefull range and will auto focus on the D40.
Look here :)

But if you must have the 50mm this this one will auto focus on the D40.

With the entry level Nikon DSLRs (D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100), you would want to look more towards Nikon's AF-S lenses if you want auto focus.

AF-S 50mm f/1.4G is nice, cost about $440 (US at B&H).
AF-S 50mm f/1.8G goes for about $220 (US at B&H).

Then again, as ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' marbo suggests, the 35mm is great for the D40x; goes for about $200 (US).

Keep in mind that a 50mm lens on a crop sensor is equal to a 75mm full frame lens; nice for portraits on your camera. While the 35mm is close to "normal" lens on your camera...

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you further.
