We are going to The Butterfly Pavilion this Saturday for their tripod photography event. I wish I had better lenses. Either way it should be fun and educational.

Any suggestions, ideas, instructions?

I'm super excited about it, and I can't even go! That seems like such a cool place to go and hang out for a few hours.

invest in one of these, Amazon Link - Extension Tube and have fun chasing around all the little critters.

Westminster, CO, I think. I've photographed BFs there. It's really a great place. Beautiful and exotic BFs. It can be very warm and humid in the big room. Dress like you're going to be in a rain forest jungle. Make sure your equipment is not cold when you go into the BF room. If you can leave your camera and lenses in the sun for 30 minutes, you will have little trouble with fogging. But, if it's cold outside or your equipment is in an A/C car, you will waste 30 minutes waiting for your equipment to warm up to the point it doesn't fog. The BFs move a lot. It's a challenge to get a great pose, lock in the focus and press the shutter release before the BF launches. The trick is to focus on your subject with a pleasant bg for an eye-pleasing bokeh. It depends on which lens you are using, but you need to be aware of the thickness of your DOF plane. Mostly, wide open aperture will be best. Also, awareness of minimum focus distance is really important.

Posting these from 05/13/10 Butterfly Pavilion visit so you can learn from my mistakes. Wonderful plants in this greenhouse-like place. I must go back sometime. I used both my 200mm and 400mm. I actually think about 300mm would be best. But, you can get close enough sometimes with a 200mm lens. 400mm is okay, but my f/5.6 was slightly slow on this day.
