I just looked at National Geographic photography:
//photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/?source=NavPhoHome
and all I can say: WOW! What incredible photographs! My idea that National Geographic is just about wildlife was entirely wrong! This challenge looks now more like a free study challenge to take the most powerful photograph with the most possible impact on the viewer within the next 7 days! A tall order but worth trying.

I think everyone that enters the challenge should submit their photo to

your shot

National geographic publishes two shots from users each month. One is picked by the editor. One is picked by the public. A dozen shots are picked each weekday to go into the voting. It's incredibly exciting to have a shot on the National Geographic website! I had one picked once, and was around 8th or 9th in the final voting results. It's great to say that you've had a photo picked and shown on the national geographic website, and I believe it stays in the archives for 6 months.

It would be fun to see if any of ours would get picked.

I am a bit confused. This seems to focus on animal lovers - was I wrong after all?

No, I think you are right. While the reader submitted photos may be heavy on nature, the publication's pictures are more varied. Some of the most powerful images for me are their urban shots and street portraiture that illustrate the local culture and people. This is going to be a very challenging challenge.

If you look at the top shots -- the ones that made it into the magazine -- there's actually more people/human interest photos than wildlife.

top shots

This is definitely a wide open challenge. Not strictly wildlife.

Agreed. I'm taking this as "documentary photography", which is wide open to many things. Wildlife, landscapes, culture, human impact on the planet, etc.

One of the best shots of my life was for this Challenge. It involved a trip of several hundred miles,
and the lucky happenstance of a once-a-year Winter event, and it 'still' came in way down in 33rd place.

I'll have to think of something else this year, but I sure look forward to the attempt.

I have been a life long reader of Nat Geo. They are the reason I got into photography to begin with. I wasn't around for the first challenge so I'm really looking forward to shooting for it. I've always loved how they have let their photogs shoot in their own style, never trying to get them to shoot a certain way. Unfortunately now, there are only 2 staff photographers left. At least that was what I heard a couple of years ago. This is an open challenge. But the real challenge will be showing the world in a new way, one that should capture a young veiwers eyes and make them want to do it for themselves.

I would love to enter this challenge, but have absolutely NO clue what I could possibly shoot. I'd hate to do a set-up shot... this is gonna be tough.

Think about what you have in your area that might be a potential subject for a National Geographic article. Do you live anywhere near the Everglades? Have a look over some back issues to get a feel for what suits. I already have plenty of ideas in my own area and a possible entry already.

funny you should mention that, I work at a State Park! LOL! I don't see many exciting animals too often though.. With 105 degree weather with heat index in Florida, I don't want to have to hike a lot! Hopefully I can pull something off!

I am hoping people are not expecting just animal shots. National Geographic is about much more than just animals. They always have such great articles about unique people and places.

Might go bird hunting tomorrow or something... Not many birds around here.. Unless I add a big old crappy building as the background... We will see if I can muster up something for this one.

LOL! Actually, no, not in this town. Now where I used to live was a whole 'nother story.

I was a huge fan of NG, esp as a kid, rarely reading more than the captions - or needing to, as the photography was just so stunning. One photog in particular shot lots of wide angle stuff, I just loved seeing their shots. Don't remember their name though :-/

As for tribal peoples...hmm...there are the Amish across the border in Ogdensburg. Sadly, though they will gladly let me take photos of what they have made and their horses, buggies etc, photos of them are not allowed. More's the pity because most of the girls have just incredible skin. *sigh*...so guess that means I'm stuck with the local rednecks in the Limerick Forest...

Oh, heck's bells. Try Presbyterians.

I was brought up with National Geographic. Early memories include sitting on my father's knee to look at the latest 'Yellow Book'. I used to fantasize about becoming a NG photographer and I still subscribe to the magazine. The photos are often breathtaking, and sometimes just informative covering just about every genre. I have no idea what I could come up with to meet this challenge but I sure do look forward to seeing what other people do.
