Thoughts?

Mentioned in THIS thread...

My idea would be something like a sunrise at a beach... Or sunset if we plan on making it on the West Coast.

Mind is still in the thinking process so any ideas on date & time and the place would be good.

i prefer the east coast but can probably travel to the west coast if need be. up near me the beaches are crowded and nondescript, maybe something further south so we can hit vizcaya the same day? where are you?

I too am on the East Coast and there are a few beaches here that are somewhat people-free however that's all it is... Just a beach. No pier, rocks, anything. So it would be sort of plain... I will keep my eye out online for some nice non-crowded beaches on the East coast.

I'm in Miami Beach (South Beach), and I'm willing to do anything anywhere.

My suggestion would probably be the Everglades National Park - Shark River, since it's easily accessible and can be transitioned into a tour of the Wynwood art district in Miami, which is a real treat, especially if someone wants to bring a model along.

If we want non-crowded beaches though I'm not at all sure Miami is a good spot, although there are a few generally empty beaches near Ft. Lauderdale that would work just fine for a morning thing.

I can see about bringing a model or two... (I have a few friends that may be willing to sit in front of a camera for a few hours) *Not saying that they are professional models or anything but they are fun to be around and would give some natural smiles*

Are they willing to dress "urban" and pretend to use a spray can? (I'm thinking something David LaChapelle style)

One may be willing to do that (the male friend I am talking about)...

This is him seen here

If he is free I don't see him not rejecting it. He is always up for doing something.

Nice shot! Yeah, he'd do fine. I'd probably even be willing to do it, go grab some cheap thrift store clothes and paint them up a bit... That wouldn't be a bad portrait to have of me really. :) Hell, why not have him painting me while I pretend to paint the wall?

All kinds of good stuff.. Of course, the Everglades portion of the proposed trip also presents a ton of great opportunities for nature/wildlife.

The biggest challenge I face in this whole thing is the fact that I'm traveling all the time now, I'm in Connecticut as we speak, but will be back to SoBe Thursday night through Sunday. The pattern should remain somewhat constant, with me in CT during the week and in either New Mexico or South Beach on the weekends... If we could schedule a few weeks in advance that would help to ensure that I'll be able to make it.

Sure thing. I would love to go back to the everglades too. All good choices. And yea, I guess I could do that shoot as well being that I need a new facebook profile photo! Haha! I think I will be doing a self portrait soon too to get me in the mood when we start setting dates and such.

Maybe we could "trade" services.. :) I'm not very good at self portraits...

I have only done one that I actually wanted to edit and make look cool and it was mainly a photoshop editing style attempt...

Came out good if you ask me! Haha!

im in coral springs about half hour from anywhere down here (well except sobe, probably more like 45-hour) so i'm game for anything with advance notice a few weeks should be fine. the beaches up here (pompano and deerfield) are quiet in the mornings but not so sure they have anything interesting to offer, i will check with some friends that live out that way. people willing to pose would be awesome.

eta: for horrendous spelling

Hmmm, I could be interested, depending on when/where. I'm up in West Palm Beach.

Ditto. Except I'm much further away in the Orlando area.

I'm about 2 hours from Miami, 90 min from WP Beach. Depending on what else is going on, I may be able to get involved. I would enjoy seeing the DPC'ers and having a shooting session. I'm not much on urban, because it's not the territory that I normally cover, but would be happy to check it out.

I have been looking around (on the web) for some beaches that are not really crowded and that are nice but I am having no luck. I am not really sure how to look up something like that.

A place I thought of for some street photography though (maybe after a beach shoot and if we are close enough) would be City Place of West Palm... Linky

I will keep searching places but again any suggestions are much appreciated.

I find Google Earth's satellite view to be pretty darn useful... Take a look at the beaches just east of the Fort Lauderdale Airport, they seem like they'd be interesting and they're pretty much deserted, although I can't say I've actually taken the time to verify this.

I'm in the Parkland/Boca area, so keep me posted. My life is wicked busy right now, but if it was far enough in advance and on a weekend day, perhaps I could burn a vacation day... Allot of my photos have come from the Everglades, but I'm up for anything, and I'd love to try my hand at Street Photography, so keep us posted on when and where...

So everyone seems to be good with weekends... Next up is to find a place that is good for the morning-about lunch time...

I figure by then we will be burnt out by the sun. I was thinking too if everyone seems to like the everglades so much.. Why not there? I have only been there once and it was to go fishing not to take photos. I have no clue where is a good place to take photos in the everglades so I would not be able to say what a good location is. Anyone close or have been there a lot?

Robert yakatme is familiar with the glades on that coast near Miami, and Tammster knows some places toward W P Beach. I live out near the west coast, so I'm not up to speed on the east side. The Flamingo road is a run that everyone out that way seems to like for birds and gators.
It's Florida, so a rainy day "plan B" is something to think about while making plans. In my area it rains about 3: PM during the summer months.

Haha! Funny you mention that I was just thinking of an inside place for a photoshoot with some models. If we can get one model per person to come then we can do a photographer/model GTG... Just a thought if we want to do that.
06/21/2011 12:05:59 AM · #22
Bah, no need for so many models! One or two for the entire group is enough- more would be problematic.

I'd almost rather do something besides what I know because I've done all of that quite a few times, still, there's a reason why I keep doing it... :)

Speaking of, let me tell you a little detail about the stuff I've mentioned..

As for indoorish shoots, there's a great warehouse / abandoned building in the Wynwood art district that I've been able to "sneak" into plenty of times (the fence is cut), and there is a ton of GREAT art in there, I could probably even set up something official so we would be legal about it (I've got the artists numbers, but I'm not sure if they would want paid or not, perhaps I could convince them it's worthwhile publicity)... Not to mention that Wynwood is a huge area that is just the most amazing art everywhere on the walls, higher quality graffiti is rare, and there can't be many places in the world that rival this for it's sheer quantity of quality work.

As for Everglades, I don't think that it gets much better than Shark River Valley, but I've only been to a few places in the Glades and someone else may know better spots... The reason I say it's good is that it's accessible, there's a tram you can ride, or you can walk/bike the trail, it covers a variety of types of environments, and there's an observation tower that allows you to see far out across the landscape (granted it's a fairly boring landscape, but it's the only spot I know of in the Glades that gives such a vantage point)...

FYI I also have an annual pass to the Everglades National Park, so at least one car load is covered for entrance fees (not like they're very much anyway)...

Also, since this is all Miami stuff, South Beach is just a hop away and the opportunities for street photography there are endless (Ocean Ave and Lincoln Rd are just two of the amazing spots, there are tons more, not to mention the views of downtown that are available from Watson island..)

I've not done Flamingo road, but I'd certainly be up for it, actually if anyone knows how we could manage to get "backwoods" in the swamp that could be pretty awesome too - far cooler than the designated areas that I'm familiar with thus far.

Oh, and if the thing runs into the evening there's also the art deco district on SoBe, with all it's neon and art deco buildings it's a pretty good location too, and I've been meaning to do more work there...

I'm up for another gtg here in South Florida...doesn't matter where, I'll be there.

I organized and led a 7 day Florida Keys, Everglades, and Key West GTG back in 2007 in which we had about 9 of us. You can see our itinerary and a few of the images are still in the thread.

We spent some time in The Everglades, took an airboat ride, drove through the keys staying at three hotels along the way, rented a boat for a couple of days for some touring around and snorkeling on the reefs, and had a good time partying and shooting in Key West.

Anyway, I know the area down here pretty well and I'm up for anything. Just keep in mind that the summers here are extremely hot, humid, and subject to severe thunderstorms (good pics) in the afternoons. Then there's the mosquitoes and other nasty bugs in The Everglades this time of year. Not trying to scare anyone off, just be prepared if you want to hang out in 'The Glades', especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.
