OK, it's a once in a grat while opportunity. The Union Pacific 844 is on a run through our town. It still be stopped for two hours, it's the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific. It's literally the last of its kind.

So naturally I decide to take 3 cameras to shoot it. (Bad idea #1)

I decide to take two film cameras, and my trusty 40D. I've never shot either of the two film cameras before. (Bad idea #2)

As the train arrives early, I'm crossing the parking lot, I hurriedly try to get a couple of shots off with the Mamiya 645 Super. Something is wrong. The shutter won't fire. If I set to the manual override I can get it to fire at 1/60. But the winder won't advance the film until I hit the load button. Frantically I force a few shots to get something, anything, on medium format. (Bad idea #3)

I switch to the Canon Elan 7e. Everything seems to be working. The eye control is working like a champ. By now there are a of people, and if you got to take a shot with a fancy camera, several figure you must have a great shot set up. I had one guy actually step in front of me, and then literally back up into me. Hot, hot day, didn't bring water. (Bad idea #4)

I start switching between cameras to get shots on all of them. This results in some confusion as I am in such a frenzy that I start forgetting which camera I have in my hands. (Bad idea # 5).

As I am moving and shooting I am hurriedly pulling cameras out and putting others back in, my bag because I am worried about someone walking off with cameras in the middle of everything. (Bad idea # 6).

The good... I did notice that the dark slide was still inserted in the 645 after about six forced shots. So I did get some images in medium format. I did some digital and 35mm film images.

The bad... Scratch one lens, literally... The 7e toppled out of the bag, face down onto the gravel. Some serious rash on the front element. Did I mention that I removed the UV filter off the lens, right BEFORE leaving the house? (Bad idea # 7)

Did have a good time, did eventually find water, and managed to salvage some pictures, if not the lens.

Ahhh, you gotta love it! We're freaks for images. Sometimes we just don't plan ahead enough though.

Ow, that sucks. Awesome train. I photographed it about year back when it came through Ft. Worth. Was a great subject to try out my new wideangle lens on.

I'd love to see your shots when you have them to post. Here's some of my faves from when it visited here:

How do you salvage a lens with gravel scratches?! As I have one of those!

I don't know that there is much to be dome. The scratches and chips will not polish out. However, it does not seem to reallly affect image quality. Does look nasty though.

Mine gives terrible lens flare when pointing at the sun, and shows up with anything over F9

You use it to focus on things relatively far away ... it will reduce the incoming light by some fraction of a stop, but if you're focused past 10-15 feet or so it shouldn't show up in the images.

Someone once posted a link to a pretty nice landscape image, and then one of the lens use to shoot it, which looked as if it had been hit dead-center with a hammer.

I think that only matters if your using F2-7ish.. after F9 it starts to show, at least on mine. F22 is always fun :)
