I just bought the Xs drive box from computergeeks, just have to put a laptop hardrive in it now.
It looks like the power button is pretty sensitive and that it turn on the drive pretty easily by itself when you just hold it, even in its pouch. Do the people who have it have any problems with that ?
Lionel
PS : by the way, techbargains.com has a 10$ coupon for computergeeksm, alpost permanent

I bought mine on EBay with a 15 gig drive already installed... I carry mine in a belt pouch camera bag along with my camera and have never had it power itself on (to my knowledge)... I think you're going to love it... The biggest problem I've had with it so far is explaining what it is and where to get one to everyone that sees me use it :)

I bought a 15GB X-drive on E-bay for $179 before Christmas. Works fine. I went away for five days and didn't have to worry about filling up my 128MB and 32MB CF cards.

My Dad took out our movie projector and showed our old movies (from over 25 years ago). Pretty funny to see me and my brother running around. I took about 65 4MB (30 second) video clips of the movie screen with my G2. It really did a good job. I couldn't have done that without my X-Drive. All in all, I took pictures and movies for approx. 640 MB. It'll store 7,500 images at my usual setting (super fine, max size)

The problem with the Power button is common. I cut out a doughnut shape out of thick card board and tape it to the device when I'm not using it. Not the most elegant thing, but it works fine.

Any one else interested can see a review at Steve's Digicams.

So... you buy that for under $100.. and then an external harddrive?
what is the difference, if any, between this product and, say, Mindstore or any of the other portable harddrives on the market?
what made you go for this? price? ease of use?
Thanks.

No I bought the empty 'box drive case reader thing' empty because I already had a spare 2.5" laptop hardrive to put it in.
If you do not have a laptop hardrive .. you need to find the best price, buy it with a 10GB hard drive , or buy a spare harddrive on the side and put it in (really very easy and I am not a hardware techy guy)
I went for that one because it was the only 'empty box' I could find and people here were happy with it.
I guess if you feel a little 'insecure' it would be best to be able to actually check the picture are copied. This thing do not display the number of pictures on any LCD screen so you have to trust it and it seems that nobody had any problem with it.

So overall it is a less expensive but reliable alternative, but doesn't give you a reading on your files.
How about with travel? Have you gone thru airport security with this device or anything like it?
anyone?

Karen, for the airport security I am not sur eto fully understand but it's a hard drive so it goes through the xray without any problem if its your question> It's like passing a laptop throught security.

That XsDrive sounds great. I thought about just buying one, but I don't want to get in trouble with my wife :)

I'll be going through in two weeks for international travel so I'll be able to tell you then... I'm assuming that if I turn it on, they'll be happy... I plan to show up early for the flight in case I need to connect it to my laptopo and give security a demo :)

Anyone else have experience with the other 'digital wallet' devices out there ? I'm going to need one soon - my few compact flash cards aren't going to be enough for two weeks in Australia and I'm not going to buy any more so I need some sort of download solution.

Work bought a 20GB MindStor wallet for me and I have had generally good use out of it. OCCASSIONALLY it screws up a file on transfer -- don't know if it's between card and wallet or wallet and computer, but it appears that it drops like half of a color channel (or something similar).

Definitely more cost effective than buying multiple cards -- I had two cards -- one to switch out and shoot with while the other was transferring to the wallet. A wallet will definitely be part of my equipment when I eventually upgrade (whether or not it's a MindStor, however, I couldn't say).

Doing a little research on portable devices, and this one caught my eye. It's a little pricey, but it's packed with features!

Anyone have any experience with this product?

The ImageBank (Got one from CompUSA $230) comes with a 3GB HD and an external power supply (12VDC and 120VAC). I put a 12.5mm 20GB IBM TravelStar in it, and it works just fine.

It uses standard AA batteries in an external pack (these are held in the same beltpack as the ImageBank. I use 1700mah NiMH rechargables in it and I get about 4.5hrs of use that way.

I can dump a full 1GB microdrive to it in a bout 15min. Takes longer to copy from the ImageBank to my computer, USB only.

It does have an LCD to tell you the progress of your copy, but it only shows you a bar scale. It also uses a bar scale to show you how full it's drive is (seems to be pretty accurate), but it does not show you how many images it currently has in it.

Simple, but very usefully. Takes CF and SmartMedia. Good alternative to the $400-$600 digital wallets out there.

Happy Clicking. :-)

I bought an image tank before these new Xdrives came out on sale. Came with a lead that plugs into a cigar lighter as it has no internal power supply, that plugs in separately. Wish I'd waited for the xdrive, but never mind. Any UK guys who fancy one of these portable storage devices can get one from www.card-media.co.uk. I recommend them.
