Any of you have an opinion about Fujifilm's new camera? I'm looking for something a bit smaller so that i can have a camera with me most of the time. I think i'm building a preference for street photography, i would still keep an SLR and use that when i know i'm going to take photos, but it would be nice to have something not to big and that is a bit less conspicuous. I found a review here: x100 and some samples here: Flickr. If anybody uses another small type of camera for street stuff i'd also be interested in hearing about it, i could do with some help choosing.

I have no experience of the x100 and it is very expensive. I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 and I love it.

Some examples of mine, mostly snapshots, here > Lumix LX5

Have you looked into the micro 4/3 cameras like the Oly Pen and the Pannie GF2? Compact with interchangeable lenses. AF might be better too. That was one thing that really bummed me out about the X100. It looked so glorious... and then I saw the contrast. I do admit the LX3 I have focuses pretty well for a P&S, and I'd expect no less for the LX5.

ETA: Also, the Sony NEX might be down your alley, but it looks pretty large with the lens attached.

Thanks for the reply, yeah i've been looking into the Oly Pen and the Pannie GF2, some people here at dp seem to do some fine photos with one or the other, its just so that i'll have something with me all the time without having to carry a bag about everywhere i go. The X100 does have a lust factor that the others don't, but this won't be my main camera so its best not to listen to my desires and go with something more practical and cheaper, i'll check out the LX5 also, thanks.

I found it is ALWAYS best to get what gives you the horn. If you fancy the X100, and it IS a fantastic bit of kit, then I suggest you go with it and enjoy every last tiny bit of it. That is what life is about for me, enjoyment.

As MAK says and if you can afford it ...

luminous landscape thoughts

I've been contemplating it for some time but is out of budget for time being. I do have the E-PL1
and I am mostly pleased with it. I might buy for mine a 14mm 2.5 Panasonic lens to have it more pocketable.

Some of my E-PL1 pics here

A DPCer friend of mine in Singapore has one. Got to check it out last time I was there. Definitely has that Leica M3 feel to it. Solid build, nice placement of controls, etc. The APS-c sensor size is nice on a compact, too.

The price ($1200) and the fixed lens would keep me away from it.

For the same price you can get the Oly PEN E-PL2 with the kit lens and the 14-150mm (28-300mm equiv). The kit lens on the Oly is collapsible, so it isn't much bigger than the x100. If you want a fast prime, the Pany 20mm 1.7 is hard to beat.

What I have read though is the people that get the x100 love it. They are hard to find.

Thanks for the links, i've narrowed it down to an oly pen with the 20mm 1.7 or the X100, a fixed focal length lens doesn't bother me and the equivalent of 35mm will be just right for the streets around here. Two very well know French photo magazines have just done an in-depth write up about the X100, according to them its well worthwhile and one of the magazines was even surprised that it wasn't priced higher, they both mentioned however that auto focus speed was average but that the image quality was top notch. Over here the X100 isn't available until next month so i have some time to ponder the question.

If you decide on the fuji you can buy one from HERE they have 3 left in stock, I was there today buying filters and saw the very machine, even held it, very nice but out of my budget.

eta - they have no problems shipping to Europe.

One thing about the fuji is that there are none of those curious scene modes, like granny chasing the puppy, which shouldn't be such a big deal, but which I find immensely sexy and worth a few extra big ones.

I got one last weekend and am really enjoying it so far. As I can carry it many more places than my D7000 I might even start entering a few more challenges :)

I couldn't see it in the camera list, though, so can't add it to my profile or search for what others are managing to achieve with it... am I missing something?

TIA,
Paul.

Remembering, way back to my early experiences with photography, and shooting fixed focal length cameras, you will sometimes feel restricted by the single angle of view.
On the other hand, it can become a positive thing, because with experience you can learn that angle of view, and have a pretty good feel for what's going to be included in a scene shot from most any viewpoint. After a while, you can get pretty good at "shooting from the hip" without even looking in the viewfinder or LCD, which is great for candid street stuff and grab shots.
I'm pretty happy with a little Fuji XP10 that I found on eBay for about $60. I keep it on my belt, and it allows me to capture a lot of very good photos that would otherwise be passed up. I like that it's water proof and crash resistant as well. I use it when traveling to copy the bits of paper and business cards that I get from people that I meet so I can have them for later reference without having to sort through a batch of easy to lose paper scraps. I also use it at work to record machine name plates.
I highly recommend having some sort of good point n' shoot type camera. The retro look of the X100, is pretty cool, though the price is a lot more than I would pay just to have the "old school look" factor.
If you buy the X100 and feel you need longer or wider focal lengths, you can always buy the add on lenses for that. I used to use one with my Sony Handicam to get wider shots, and it worked pretty effectively.

FWIW Rockwell loves the camera. Personally I like my Canon G11 for compact usage. But if I had a spare $1200 I would love an X100.
