Ok, So I started with lesson 3, and I worked on the first main character, which took me a long time, I'm so bad on selections!, anyways.. so now I have a layer showing only our handsome model and no bg, the bg is still there but is hidden by the mask... Am I doing this right?

Try this? Right click > Save Target As...

edit: Right click on the link, not the pic

Thanks Pam, I tried it and although it shows up on my desktop as a jpeg file I can't open it with window viewer or Photoshop (because a jpeg marker segment length is too short).

Got the Umbrella and ball image from Shannon and they work.

Package up a text file, the pictures, and the PDF (for guidance) and attach it to a ticket directly to Langdon, and he can add it to the Tutorials section. Since you've already started this, you might want to wait until this adventure is done so you can incorporate anything you learn into a final version.

I suggest you figure out a way to title these so that each lesson is in a separate tutorial; they can probably be linked to each other. AKAIK for each tutorial or how-to article posted here your membership will be extended by one month, or you can get $5 (USD) credit at DPC Prints.

ETA: I just remembered that you already know how to do this ... :-)

Maggye - Yes you are doing it right. Now save that as a PSD and move onto the next image. Continue until you only have the person in each image and save as a PSD.

GeneralE - Awesome, thanks General. I will get to that later this week. I am exhausted from todays shoot and have a bigger day tomorrow.

dianapf1 - I am sorry that you are having difficulty. I am not sure why it is causing issues for you. Thankyou so much to Shannon for coming to the rescue. If you have further issues please continue to let us know in this thread and one of us will send them to you. For anyone reading this that may be having issues. I have put them into a folder on DPC plus on my own website. I have also emailed them to people so there are many ways we can get them to you.

On a side note, I am so pleased to see people getting their teeth into this. I know you will all learn something from these lessons and if it helps you to grow then it is all worth it. I have so much that I want to teach you. I can't wait to get into the thick of it. You are in for some fun.

No worries Charlie. In this class you can work at your own pace.

hihosilver - No worries...if you have any difficulties understanding any part, please don't hesitate to ask. I know these lessons sound very basic, but they are crucial to this type of editing. If you don't know how to use your layers, masks and blend modes...then you just won't be able to get there.

Not too worry! I will do my homework! I just need to set aside a couple of focused hours to get it done.

Thanks, Judi...:-)

amnon - It's good to see that you are using a soft brush, however you need to zoom in and carefully do your edges. The colour fades off way before your umbrella edges.

Maggye - That's awesome Maggye....it does get quicker with practice.

hihosilver - :)

so, I have all the characters and the main frame, but somehow the angled frames are giving me a hard time, I cannont get the selection straight, is there a tool I can use for this?

For that I use Selected Colour Range and then pick up the rest using your Polyganol Lasso Tool which makes it easier to select straight edges but still go around corners.

Okay, for theones who have finished cutting out all the pieces we will move onto the joining of the characters. The main character is made of 3 pieces.

9206 - face
9211 - upper body
9217 - lower body and belly

Start with 9211 and drag 9206 onto the same image in PS and mask out the areas of 9206 that you don't want. Using the Free Transform tool rotate and stretch or shrink the face to fit. When you are using the Free Transform tool, you will see a bounding box appear. If you hold down the shift button and drag the corner in or out, it will remain the same size ratio. However, if you hold the control key down and drag the corner in or out you will see it has a totally different effect. Have a play with it and see for yourself. Mask out around the cheeks for a good blend using a 53% opacity brush.

When that is done drag 9217 onto the image and mask out the areas that you don't want. Using the Free Transform tool rotate and stretch or shrink the lower body and belly to fit. Mask out around over his shirt for a good blend using a 53% opacity brush.

When you have done that save it as a PSD for further working later but also save a JPEG and upload it in here for me to check how you went. I would rather you don't flatten the file in case I pick up any errors. If the file is still in layered format it will make things a lot easier. However you will be merging the layers (not flattening, that's a big difference) prior to bringing all the images into the one file.

Repeat these steps for joining the small character - 9223 and 9224.

Here's my first go at it. Not sure if I'm the only one but the face was SO HARD.

Uh....now that I look at it, I was sloppy with the black. I'll fix that.
