Well it appears that I have a few people approaching me to learn how to do Creative Editing like my recent Visual Pun entry and my smoke creations.

It got me thinking, while I don't have the time to privately tutor all who have asked, maybe I can start a similiar thing to what Heida has started but instead of bombarding that thread, start a separate thread and keep it all in one place. This is all Heida's fault...but if it means some people will have a door opened to what they can do, then great work Heida.

So if you want to join in this thread please add your name here. I will be starting by explaining the steps of the images in question and then set you assignments, both using supplied images and eventually your own images.

Add your name peoples before this class gets under way.

You can work at your own pace as I will be putting the lessons in bold so you can keep up with all the other posts.

Lesson 1

Okay for the ones who don't know a lot about layers and/or masks here is your first lesson. It may seem really basic but I need to get you up to par to take you to the next step which will be starting soon. You can work at your own pace but you need to let me know when you finish and any questions. Remember no question is dumb. Also use your own images or take them from my portfolio for this lesson.

You may be using a different editing program but the steps will be basically the same just located in slightly different areas.

Lesson 2

Here is another lesson on cloning and painting over black and white images. These skills are very useful in editing of all forms. Please keep in mind this is not how I edited these images for the challenges, they were images I chose later for these lessons. There are some useful tips on using layers and how to keep track of them.

Lesson 3

Here are some Mask tips that I use all the time.

Shift+click on mask in layer palette - This hides the mask. You will see a red cross over the mask icon in the layer palette. Shift+click to reveal the mask again. This is useful when you want to see if your work has made a positive effect on the overall image.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27133/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_948826.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27133/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_948826.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Control+click on mask in layer palette - By doing this you will turn your mask into a selection. Useful for working on that area on another layer. Or while marching ants are present Shift+Control+I will invert the selection so you can work on that area on other layers.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27133/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_948825.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27133/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_948825.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Alt+click on mask in layer palette - Awesome for seeing where you have worked on your image in large format. You can paint or do whatever on your mask and see where you are affecting the mask in detail.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27133/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_948824.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27133/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_948824.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Keep the names coming. I am currently judging a photo comp. So later this arvo I will be putting up the steps I used to create 'I've been framed". It would be then be a good time to ask questions based on that montage. That will give me an indication of what you are all needing or wanting to learn. I also would like to know if you all understand how to use layers and masks as they are critical to this type of editing. If you don't then I will shoot you through a lesson that will get you started on using them.
