Here again was my submission to The Color Purple challenge, which I titled "Moments Before Purple's Conception":

A couple of people commented that it would have been better if the image had shown the moment after purple's conception instead. Of course I have that one too!

My initial concept was indeed to go with something like the latter. Only after I reviewed all the photos I took, did I feel that the former was the less obvious and more compelling image. The competition instructions were to show or suggest the color purple, after all, and I thought it would be more fun to suggest.

On the other hand, I sometimes wonder whether I make poor emotional choices as my right brain runs rampant in the countdown toward submission, and whether I might do better to stick to my initial left brain concepts. :)

So, did I make the right choice, or the wrong choice? Why? And how do you decide which of your options to submit?

Of course, I had many more shots along the lines of the following, but I preferred the ones like the above for their simplicity and drama.

I gave this a five. The concept is a great one but the softer focus is what I felt hurt this photo. The second photo I would have scored higher if the focus was on both colors. When I look at it as it is, I see the blue being focused on with the red in the background. The mix is not really purple and again it would need to be sharper, crisper-looking. I don't care for the third photo. Too messy looking.
Just my humble opinion. :D

I think I like the third picture (Red Blue and Purple Dispersion) the most out of all of them. The colors are really cool looking. Call me strange (okay, please don't), but it kind of reminds me of some microscope slide of blood vessels or something?? (eew)

I had rated your original picture a 6 in the challenge. I thought it was creative, but just didn't have that much impact on me.

Yes, I had my stuggles with getting a crisp image. My setup invovled a large (maybe 20 litre) crystal vase filled with water. I used one white board as a backdrop, and one under the vase. I used two 250W tungsten lamps, one pointed at the backdrop, and one aimed directly into the vase, positioned to minimize reflections. I dropped food colouring into the water. I could not use the 10D's autofocus, since it did not know what to focus on, so was manually focussing as I shot. I was not very satisfied with the sharpness of any of the many images that I shot in that session. I think the distortion caused by the crystal and its curvature may have been the prime culprit behind the softness.

Any suggestions on how to improve sharpness in this kind of photo?
