The last few contests, I have been sucking, although I feel they are awesome images that would do well. Anyways, Im not ranting.

Im just hopeful for the brown this time :)

I'd like to call others like me that are lacking in their work to make use of the challenges to propel them into the stratosphere.

I'm redoing my whole portfolio and I want to use the DPC challenges as an igniter. Going above and being, renting out studios and equipment, models, models the works.

So I hope that there are others out there like me, that will refuse to get put down by low votes and use this opportunity to do better.

Anyway, my thoughts.

Never, and I say again NEVER let DPC voters decide whether you are a good photographer or your shots are good or not. DPC is not the real world and the voters aren't who you have to make happy.

Yup...I'm with you. Since the accident, then the floods and the book I have finally started to see myself getting a life back and I have realised that I never really allowed myself the time I needed to recuperate properly. Also work has been hectic for the last two years and I haven't really been able to photograph for myself and was starting to lose the enthusiasm. It started to feel like a job. So now I am taking the bit of a break for the next 12 months. I am still going to cruise along with work but not advertise to try and allow myself time to rest and find myself again. Plus give me a chance to get my business back to where I want it. And with all of this I have actually been able to photograph for myself and for some challenges which pleases me. My scores on these images have been up and down but I have been trying new things and just enjoying photography. I am hoping that this will push me to discover new areas and find myself again.

No, I dont think that DPC is a good indicator of my skills. In fact I'm very confident in my photographic ability. Im just using it as a catalyst to propel myself to the next level.

Hey, Matt. Totally on the same page as you. While I feel that in the "real world" my photography is going through the roof, it is somehow not connecting with the general voting public on DPC. It's taking a lot of mental discipline to not equate mediocre scores with mediocre product, but I'm doing it. And I am doing exactly what you want to do - getting out there and shooting with models, on location, etc. Let me know if you want to collaborate on something and we'll burn it up!

I've made few, ok no, appearances in challenges lately because it seems like I'm always shooting, editing or retouching for clients when I'm not doing the regular job. But, in the spirit of this thread, I really do want to make dpchallenge more of a catalyst for my own personal photography. What I really need to do is not worry about the votes and simply use each week as a personal challenge to stretch my own creativity.

I still think this is a runner up... I don't care what's on front page right now, and that's what my taste is.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1369/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_944721.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1369/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_944721.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Last couple of years, after I came back from my "quitting"... I don't think about DPC votes too much, voters here are crazy :-\

DPC is mostly for the discipline of taking pictures, practicing the scales. Or so I think of it. If you participate for the scores it's not a passion, it's not a hobby but a game. Go bowling instead. Play poker.

There is some good knowledge that we accumulate in time. The general taste in the arts is pretty dismal and in general is formed after it's validated by time. The general taste is for "more of the same", the "same" meaning sometimes what was despised when it first appeared.
If you want to score high at this site, try copying the ones that get the awards. Not that it would be an easy feat either and you might lose your personal input and freshness and just go for the technique and stealing ideas. Would it please you to respond to a certain taste established surreptitiously at this site?

Sigh, me too. I have three in voting right now, and two are at 5.2, and one slightly better at 5.6. I had hopes for a 6 on two of the entries.
Its been a while since one of my entries has been loved.
