All of the alienbees portable power options are on indefinite back order.

So where does that leave me?

What are some other viable options?

Powerless. ;-)

Well, for the price of a Vagabond II, you can get several Flashpoint II strobes from Adorama and a battery pack.

I wonder if something like this would work at all.

Not recommended for AB's unless it has a pure sine wave inverter.

If you can find a pure sine wave inverter, you can use it to run your lights. I have a Vagabond, but the battery went bad. A replacement was pretty costly compared to buying a deep discharge marine battery. I made a little cart to pull the battery around on wheels, pulled the ac sine wave inverter out of the vagabond and hooked it up. I now have power galore...

DC to AC power converter for your car and a long extention cord...no kidding.

I realize you are still somewhat limited but at least you get the Bee outside !

A regular inverter will damage your Alien Bees! Beware! Only use a "pure" sine wave inverter.

bump for a solution...

I've been waiting for the Alienbee portable power units to be available again too. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion that will work.

Meanwhile, where do you buy a pure sine wave inverter and how much are they? *searching Google next* The marine battery coupled with this type of inverter is a combo that I could live with.

Let me google that for you

Just a joke, please don't take offense.

My two cents on this. I used to have the Vagabond II, it worked great but it was VERY heavy (as all lead acid batteries are) and it had to be plugged into the wall charging constantly in order to preserve the life of the battery, thus impractical. I sold it on Ebay for what I paid for it 2 years prior and placed myself on the waiting list for their new Lithium battery based unit. It took like 2 or 3 months before I got it but it was TOTALLY worth the wait!! it works flawlessly and it weighs nothing. The problems is, you cant just buy a big 12 volt lithium battery and hook it up to an existing inverter, it won't work, at least that is what Paul wrote in one his forum threads, and I believe it because he is a most knowledgeable and no BS guy.

ETA: I just saw that their waiting time on the Lithium battery pack is only two weeks at the moment. It does not make sense to have a lead acid battery system anymore.

No offense taken. I love that line.

The weight is one of the reasons I went with the vagabond II. I secure it to my stand and it holds up to the wind quite well. The constant charging is a pita though.
