I suspect that to get those results you really do have to put pencil to paper.

Having just moved from Elements to CS5, can I ask a stupid question? What is the benefit of converting the base layer to a smart object?

Previously, in Photoshop, whenever we wanted to apply a "destructive" filter, like glowing edges or blur or whatever, we'd dupe the base layer and do the edit on that. The files become extremely large when you do that; typically, moderately worked PS files from FF cameras could be in excess of 500Mb per file.

Converting base layer to a smart object allows you to do/undo/modify all those adjustments on a single layer. In other words, they are no longer "destructive", you can excise them and throw them away just as you would a separate editing layer.
